This was supposed to be a Heated Rivalry Part 2 post but I had the good sense to realize I won't have the time to finish writing it in the 20 minutes I have until I have to go to bed, so, it shall remain on my mental to-do list. Have this random things post instead.

A have a friend who's a big Critical Roll fan, so thanks to her I watched the Vox Machina show with very detailed commentary and handholding through the parts I found boring and disappointing (all the straight romance).

That friend is currently busy taking care of a newborn, but she did strongly recommend I watch The Mighty Nein, the next campaign from the same bunch to be turned into an animated show, and I have to say her predictions were spot on because I absolutely loved spoilers )

Man I have a birthday this week and it's been... rough. I have a lot of baggage around my birthday, probably will for the rest of my life, but in past years I managed to really develop good coping mechanisms and techniques. And this year, for various reasons, it's just all crumbled to nothing.

This whole week is gonna be at my peak terrible mental health. Cried to [personal profile] roga on the phone about logistics, like a totally normal person. Unable to answer any questions from relatives about what I want to do this weekend. Stressing out everyone and getting stressed out myself in return. Just really good times. If you happen to be one of the people who has no baggage around celebrating your birthday (I know these people exist! I have met them!) please send those vibes my way.

My 2025 Podficcing
It's always hard for me to judge my podficcing efforts, so looking back on what I've done this year is interesting. For some basic stats, I posted 32 audioworks to AO3 in 2025, and my podfic spreadsheet says I made 17.5 hours of audio. Of those 32 works, 13 were of my own fics & 4 were collaborations of some sort. Most of the pods for fics by other people were done for either Voiceteam or Voiceteam Mystery Box (the two podfic-centric events I participated in last year), which I knew but it's sort of startling to look back ad see.

The majority of my podficcing efforts that weren't either my fics or VT/VTMB focused on long pods! I actually at first forgot that I finished my first long pod, I Thought You Were Blind, in June. But I'm super proud of what I did! 9.5 hours longs, and I kept up a weekly posting schedule for almost a year to get it complete. (Archive.org going down sometimes prevented me from updating.) I feel like I really managed to find a rhythm with my workflow with this pod—because I knew what I was doing next and also had a reason to record regularly, I think it really helped me to find how I like to do things.

It was in the spring while working on this pod that I switched to a true punch-and-roll style for recording, and oh man I love it. I don't think my current work flow would have worked for me before, I needed to go through growth in getting more comfortable speaking before I could get confident with doing a take and moving on. But I am so, so glad I finally looked into how to do punch-and-roll in GarageBand because it makes podding so much more enjoyable for me. I just get the fun of reading and don't have to agonize over which take anymore!

Doing ITYWB also taught me that I enjoying doing long pods. The uploading process is soooo much simpler when I'm just updating in a couple places and not having to start new to make new posts constantly. Which explains why the majority of my other-people's-fics pods are for events, because I spent the year working on 3 pods I considered long pods: ITYWB (9.5 hours), Epistaxis Anime (3.5 hours), and The Place You Call Home (1.25 hours). And I've got my next 3 long pods chosen, and I'm looking forward to getting into them. ^^

I don't entirely know where I'm going with this. I learned a lot about how I like to make podfics and about my own style this past year. I sort of feel like I haven't done a lot, when I look at posting different works, but then I look at my long pods and I'm really happy about what I've done. I'm hoping in 2026 to continue my momentum and not being afraid to try new things if I think they look fun. It might be nice to do some more random, shorter pods, but I can't say whether or not that will happen. I want to try to pod according to my whims, with whatever looks fun to do in the moment!

Re-listen liveblog: The Secret Commonwealth, chapters 11-22

I found a good cutoff point — about 2/3 of the way through the book, even! — so here’s Roundup Part 2 of my Secret Commonwealth re-listen.

It’s hella long. I did try to put some effort into “if I could edit this to have a more consistent plot and be more thematically-coherent, how would I fix it?”, instead of just going “and THIS was handled badly, and THAT was handled badly, and THIS TOO was–” over and over.

Also, I broke it up with cute daemon photos.

The fic I’m about to mention wasn’t good at all, and I won’t name it because the author deleted it. But I admire the author’s idea that the real solution to Shoto Todoroki’s problems is to turn him into a fox-girl.

Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries: 04 January 2026 (Advent Devotional)
BLAME

Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. (Matthew 2:16)

This question used to trouble me: How could God allow these little ones to die when His own Son was safely on the way to Egypt?

Logically it makes no sense to blame God. Herod is the one who did the evil, not God. But saying that never helps. It’s as if we expect the Herods of this world to behave that way, so when they do, we just grieve and move on without surprise. But not with God. We expect good from Him. And when we see horrible evil happening, we cry out in shock and blame. It isn’t logical, but it’s human.

I only got over this when I realized that in fact, God didn’t save Jesus from death. He postponed it. The last baby of Bethlehem died too—betrayed, flogged, nailed to a cross 30 years later. And He did it for the other babies—and for me—and for you.

Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection is the only way I can bear the horrors of the world. Because Jesus is God Himself, and He chose His path deliberately—not to save Himself, but to rescue all of us from evil, at the cost of His life. He loves us that much. If that is what God’s heart is like, the Herods of the world will never win. Jesus lives and reigns forever. And because of Him, we too will live.

WE PRAY: Lord, when horrible evil happens, save us! Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  • Do you have trouble watching the news?
  • Why do you think both ends of Jesus’ life are marked by horror?
  • How do you lean on Jesus for help in evil times?

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom
: Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

I have four cats, legally, but it's more like 3 cats and half of two cats. Reb Brown - my old man cat, Stink my half blind and brain damaged cat and Kitten my murderpuss all live here full time. Reb is an indoor cat, with occasional escape attempts. Stink and Kitten are indoor/outdoor cats, mostly because they refuse to use a litter box. Well Kitten refuses, Stink doesn't really understand the concept.  We also have Missy, who I see on occasion but she spends most of her time at the care home across the lane. And Buddy isn't out cat but spends most of his time here.

We also have three chickens, Jade, Fluffernutter and Jellylegs. We may get more in the spring. And we have 2 fish.

I also offer you these two fic about animals:

Some Of The Adventures Of Schrödinger The Cat - A Stargate SG-1 fic about Sam's cat after the Tolen are attacked.

Proper Lawn Maintenance - A Dragon Age fic about a goat.

The dreamers the liars-no lying I'm tired, but dive in the fire and I'll be right there by your side
Welcome to Sunday! I can't believe the weekend is already on the downslope. I did nothing yesterday. Watched a couple of episodes of Great British Bake Off, which was very soothing.

We're all still sick. We cough like we're a classic car trying to start, we never have tissues very far away. I do not appreciate it at all.

I plan today to do more of the same. I'd planned to sleep in, but Boodle put an end to that dream with her sharp little patting paws. I'm so glad I trimmed her claws last weekend. The rest of the day will be relaxing, watching Bake Off, maybe comfort watching something, I don't know what. Part of me is thinking Captian America: The Winter Soldier, part is thinking maybe LOTR or the Losers.

With nothing much to focus on, and no actual ability to focus, I've been perusing Cruisetok and cruises on youtube. It's been good. I've been rewatching videos of people's Alaska cruises on the Koningsdam, which is out ship. It's given me a pretty good feel for where things are, as has looking at the floorplan of the Koningsdam.

My ADHD is pleased by this. I want to know where everything is, so that I can lead my family to the various venues, like a little shepherd, until they know were they're going. My favorite is Nothern Viking Explorers videos. They did a nice story on the Koningsdam from the 2024 cruise season. There hasn't been any really comprehensive videos for 2025. Maybe I'll make one for 2026, who knows. I plan to at the very least document what it's like staying in the Pinnacle Suite for people. There's a lack of that, unfortunately, which is sad, because I'd like to know.

I am annoyed that I have nothing left to plan. We've got all our excursions, the trip is fully paid off, the pre and post cruise hotels are booked and the car services have been booked and paid for. Beyond that, there's nothing I can do. I like planning things, so this is also sad.

I got a couple of dresses to try out for the vow renewal. I think I've picked it out, though there is one dress still to come (well, 2, but the second, I didn't realize had a strappy back, so that will not work with a bra (and I need a bra.) The one I'm waiting on is a gorgeous blue dress from ThredUp.

The one I really like is a black wrap neck dress that's shot through with sparkly colored threads. It doesn't look like much on the manequin, but on a person it actually looks really nice.

The blue dress I think is supposed to come this week. Which excites me. I love getting packages. If I have energy today, I'll try on the other two dresses and see which one I like better. Of course, if I have energy, I'll dye my hair. I got a new violet color that I really think will suit me. I'll play it by ear.

Okay, time for me to wrap up and maybe think about eating something. Everyone have a stupendous Sunday!

Book Review: Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 stars)

Every Heart a Doorway is a small book that carries an astonishing amount of emotional weight.

At its heart, this is a story about children who have been somewhere else - worlds that loved them, shaped them, and made sense in ways this one never quite does. Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children offers care, understanding, and the quiet acknowledgement that returning is often its own kind of loss.

What Seanan McGuire does so beautifully here is refuse to frame those experiences as delusion or escapism. The portal worlds matter. The longing matters. The grief of being shut out of a place where you belonged is treated with seriousness and compassion.

The writing is sharp, spare, and deeply empathetic. In a very short space, McGuire creates characters who feel fully realised, each carrying their own kind of ache. Themes of identity, belonging, queerness, and neurodivergence are woven into the story without spectacle - simply allowed to exist.

There's darkness here, and tragedy, but also a fierce insistence that every child's story is real and worthy of care. This is fantasy as emotional truth, and it lingered with me long after I finished.

Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

Loosely defined! Post about your pets, pets from your canon, anything you want!

Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Also, feel free to entice engagement by giving us a preview of what your post covers.

And please do check out the comments for all the awesome participants of the challenge and visit their journals/challenge responses to comment on their posts and cheer them on.

And just as a reminder: this is a low pressure, fun challenge. If you aren't comfortable doing a particular challenge, then don't. We aren't keeping track of who does what.

Actual pets
I'm more of a cat person than a dog person.
I do have a cat. Her name is Cass, and shortly after I moved into this house (sometime during COVID) she was hanging around as the previous owners might have abandoned her. Therefore the mutual adoption occurred.

Fandom pets
Not an exhaustive list.

Daria
No canon pets in Daria, but I did write a ficlet about Daria having an unexpected pet.

An unexpected friend; of the Aquatic Variety
Jane followed Daria into her room. It was exactly as she had described it, with padding on the walls and bars in the windows. "Wow," she said. She took it in. A poster of a half-unearthed skeleton, a plain bed, a television on a trolly, models of a heart and a slice of cheese, another televison on a ceiling mount and a bookshelf with a computer set-up. Not to mention a Kafka poster. However, between the computer and the books was a small aquarium.
Jane went over to the aquarium and looked in it. It was unlike any other pet fish that she had seen before. "What sort of fish is this?" she asked.

"Talon, he's a Siamese fighting fish," Daria replied.

"Fighting Fish, huh? That's different."

"Definitely different to Quinn's goldfish, that's for sure," Daria said as she opened a box of food.

Jane chuckled.

Doctor Who
Does K9 count?

How to Train Your Dragon
Toothless (and the other trained dragons); enough said. Hiccup's interactions with him are the core of the movies (both the animated series and the remake)
I have started to write Dragons fic.

Kim Possible
Rufus being an equal part of the team with Kim and Ron.

Pokemon
Mostly various parts of the anime. But some of the games to.
(Especially Ash and his Pikachu)

Scooby Doo
Scooby and his support for Shaggy.
(Also have started to write Scooby Doo fic, not just the crossover with Daria.)

Star Trek: The Animated Series
The scene in Yesteryear with young Spock and I-Chaya.

Star Trek: The Next Generation
Data has his pet cat Spot, which makes for interesting storylines.

Star Trek: Enterprise
Porthos, Captain Archer's beagle

Superman
Krypto in the most recent movie was depicted very well.

Scarlett Investigates - Part 1
Scarlett Investigates
Scarlett O’Connell hadn’t expected to be investigating a sabotaged play. She just wanted to learn to improve her art while investigating minor campus mysteries. She had made some backdrop pieces for the campus production of The Tempest and had arrived at the college’s theater to find something wrong. The stage was a mess. She saw that the curtain had fallen completely. “Something’s not right here,” she said as she fidgeted with her tablet.

“It’s a curse,” someone said nearby,

Scarlett turned, and saw that it was Daniel Fields, a theater student on her floor. “What do you mean?” she asked, as she fidgeted with a keyring in her pocket.

“Minor incidents have been occurring all week.”

“All week?”

“Yes, mostly broken props, but now the curtain has fallen,” Daniel answered.

“Sounds like sabotage,” Scarlett said as she sketched the scene.

“What do you mean?”

“That these incidents aren’t just the normal chaos of theater.”

“How can you be sure?” Daniel asked with skepticism.

“I’m not certain,” Scarlett admitted. She was certain, something about the curtain having fallen and Daniel admission of minor incidents, piqued her interest and she knew she wanted to find out what was going on. “I’m going to investigate,” she declared.

“Wait, Scarlett,” Daneil said as she ran off. “You can’t just…” He paused as she dashed through a door backstage.

Backstage, Scarlett wondered where to start. “I’ll need to know who’s involved in the production. But who would have the cast sheet, and would it be comprehensive?” she asked as she absentmindedly sketched the scene around her.

“You there!”

Scarlett turned. “Um, I’m investigating,” she said to the girl who was coming towards her.

“You shouldn’t be here!”

“I know, but I can help!”

“How?” the other girl asked, as she tossed her long brown hair back like a supermodel.

“I notice things that others don’t. I’m Scarlett by the way.” Scarlett then held out her hand.

“You don’t know who I am, Scarlett?” the other asked in faux surprise.

“Should I?” Scarlett asked with a slight bounce, her eyes wide.

“I’m the lead actress of this production, playing Ariel.”

“Still no clue.”

“I’m Victoria Calder! I can’t believe you don’t know who I am.

“Oh, that Victoria Calder!” Scarlett said. She had indeed heard of the theater major who was known for her diva attitude and epic tantrums when her demands weren’t met in a timely manner. “Sorry, I hadn’t put face to name.”

“Unbelievable!” Victoria said with a huff. “Still, Scarlett.”

Scarlett’s attention had wandered.

Victoria snapped her fingers. “Hey!”

“Sorry. ADHD,” Scarlett said.

“Right. You shouldn’t be here.”

“You said that before. But I can notice things others miss.”

“You seem sincere,” Victoria said. “But only if I supervise you.”

“No.”

“What was that?” Victoria responded, tears coming to her eyes.

“I said no,” Scarlett said, not wanting Victoria to be a possible millstone.

“I can help!” Victoria added with her voice raised and actual tears beginning to flow.

“No!”

“Victoria balled her hands into fists and started to screech.”

Scarlett resisted the urge to block her ears . It was too much. ‘Not an overload, not now!’ she thought. “Alright,” she said. “You can help.”

Victoria calmed down and wiped her tears with a handkerchief embroidered with her initials. “Thanks,” she said.

Scarlett was still little overwhelmed. “What have you noticed so far?” she asked as she fidgeted with her sketchbook.

“Some things,” Victoria answered. “We can talk in my dressing room.”

“That would be good.”

Victoria’s dressing room was chaotic, but it was quieter than the backstage complex outside. Scarlett relaxed a bit, although she was still overstimulated.

She sat on one of the side chairs. “Now, what do you know?”

Victoria began. “It was during the initial read through. There was a loud crash that interrupted us as we reached the scene where Caliban recruits the two sailors.”

Scarlett sketched the scene, showing Caliban as bestial. “Maybe someone is objecting to the way Caliban is portrayed,” she blurted.

“No differently than the way the Bard originally wrote it. Just’s not jump to conclusions!”

“Sorry. I was musing aloud. Something I do. I don’t have much of a filter,” Scarlett admitted as she tapped her stylus against her tablet.

“Must you do that?”

“Do what?”

“The fidgeting,” Victoria exclaimed.

“Sorry. It helps me focus.”

Psalm 102
Lament
A prayer expressing deep sorrow, pain or confession to God. Uniiquely, it is a God-centred cry that moves from distress towards trust in God's promises.

'To cry is human. But to lament is Christian.' - Mark Vroegop

vs 1 - 11
The Psalmist talking about -
Lament is reliant on being honest with God.
Lament being repentance.
Hope in God must be bigger than the distress

vs 12 - 22
When our prayer is a prayer of lament, we will start to feel what God is feeling.

vs 23 - 28
Lament is far more thana good old winge or complaint.
Lament is God centered.

Dear Candy Hearts (2025)

Dear Candy Hearts artist/author,

This will be my second time participating. My AO3 is Haro. If someone feels so inclined, treats and gifts are also enabled on my account.

I'm a millennial lesbian living in the midwest US with my long time girlfriend and our menagerie of kitty cats. Cats are a welcome addition to ANY prompt I give. As far as I'm concerned all my faves are cat lovers, even if they don't know it yet.

Non-series specific likes: Found families, friends to lovers, mutually requited pining, teamwork, equality in relationships, mutual protection, physical affection, battle couples, home being a person and not a place, established relationship fic, angst and hurt comfort with a happy ending (I'm soft at heart), transfem headcanons, dancing, characters in fancy or special clothes, anything with cats. I'm also a sucker for stories where characters triumph against impossible odds, as well as stories where free will > fate.

Dislikes: noncon, dubcon, cheating, drawn out miscommunication, major character death (except what already exists in canon). Unrequited relationships, love triangles, stories about one partner outliving the other by a lot, descriptions of pregnancy, detailed descriptions of baby rearing, kids as a focal point, omegaverse, anything where a major character dislikes cats.

I'm also not really interested in smut fic as a gift. Allusions to sex, mentions of it, sensuality, and fade to black are very welcomed though!

Amyway, here's my prompts! I tend toward quite shippy requests.

永夜星河 | Love Game in Eastern Fantasy (TV) [Ling Miaomiao/Mu Sheng | Mu Ziqi/Xia Ziqi]

I am desperate for anything post-canon with our Miaomiao and Ziqi. There's so little of it out there. I'm so into these two right now! They have my heart. If you can't do post-canon, any established relationship within the timeline of the story would also be loved. Perhaps something while they're traveling together to look for his memories?

You are welcome to include any other LGIEF characters, as well as Mu Yao/Liu Fuyi as a ship.

For post-canon, I'd prefer something that isn't a reunion story, but instead takes place once they've already encountered each other at the book signing and continued their relationship. They've started their next journey together, and even if it isn't quite as full of adventure and peril as their previous one, it's still wonderful. I love anything that throws back to their time in the parallel world together and homages it, or you could also go all out and somehow bring supernatural elements to the current era. Just have fun!

Things I love with these two:

-While his journey was about self-love; our fragile, insecure Ziqi is never going to lose that aspect of him entirely. I like a Ziqi that still has some insecurity about himself, his personal worth, and of course, about if he can be the partner Miaomiao deserves (he absolutely can be). He's much healthier, happier, and more confident in himself, but he's still human.

-The sweet, teasing, and fond banter they have.

-I'd prefer no all out smut, but fade to black and implications are fine. I think if they are early in a sexual relationship, it's important for our Ziqi to be just as inexperienced as he was as Mu Sheng. Miaomiao also comes across as quite shy.

Here's a few letter exclusive series specific ideas:

1- Body worship of any kind, especially with regard to Ziqi, who is much more a normal guy in this world than the cool, badass super strong demon hunter he used to be. And toward Miaomiao, just because she's Miaomiao and she deserves to be adored.

2- Anything regarding Ziqi's illness! Although the surgery for moyamoya disease alleviates most chronic symptoms, and for most people, they just have to take daily medication, it's still true that he has a disability and that it's had a deep impact on him his entire life. Make it sweet. Maybe even explore some of the things he can do now that he's had his operation, but that he's still hesitant about because his kneejerk reaction is that he's not allowed to do any strenuous activity since it had been that way most of his life. You can ALSO explore how his illness parallels his half demon condition in Catching Demons, if you'd like.

3- Miaomiao escaping her rotten work life. She deserves a better job. Maybe her time in Catching Demons and her reunion with Ziqi, as well as his encouragement, finally gives her the courage to demand more (Ziqi tells Miaomiao his courage was born because of her, so he can return the favor). Does she get a promotion? Does she find a better place to work? Does she go back to school to find her way into a career that she's more passionate about? It's up to you.
4-
Ziqi growing his hair out. Look, Ding Yuxi is a beautiful man, but that ponytail adds something extra, and I miss it. I think Miaomiao would agree.
5-
Anything where they reflect back on their journey in Catching Demons with both fondness and melancholy (they'd miss their friends and family in there, after all).

Series specific DNW: Please no other pairings for the characters but Miaomiao/Ziqi. I'm also not much of a fan of them finding reincarnations of Fuyi and Mu Yao (I'd rather them somehow reunite with the originals someday). Please nothing that involves Miaomiao doubting whether this Ziqi is the same as the Ziqi she fell in love with in the book.

Treats welcome.

淮水竹亭 | Love in Pavilion (TV) [Zhang Zheng/Anaran]

These wonderful, heartbreaking, tragic boys. Despite their very limited screentime, they really won my heart and nestled their way into it.

I'd love to see ANYTHING romantic with these two.

I think they would be so tender; quiet and devoted Anaran, and caring and attentive Zhang Zheng.

A fix it fic would be fantastic (you could do this however you'd like, but I AM partial to them running away with each other). Zhang Zheng will need a miracle cure from a deadly illness (and perhaps a cure to a poison, if the fix it happens after Zheng Zheng takes the poison that canonically kills him), so it would be great to see some lasting repercussions. Perhaps Zhang Zheng loses his martial arts abilities or is physically handicapped in some way? But he and Anaran are still able to live on, and they are more than content.

Qingmu Yuan can be mentioned as they both have feelings for her (and I imagine they'd worry about her), but I'd like the focus to be on them. Other characters from LIP can also make appearances if needed. For this ship, something like them taking a disciple in the future would be okay, but I'd rather not see them having children themselves.

Treats are welcome.

长相思 | Lost You Forever (TV) [Xiaoyao/Tushan Jing and/or Tushan Jing & Xiang Liu]

The only romantic pairing I'm interested in is Xiaoyao and Tushan Jing. I'm always a fan of anything gentle with them.

Otherwise, I'm interested in Xiang Liu and Tushan Jing's dynamic, so something non-romantic with them could be really neat. I think they could be friends in another life.

As far as other side characters, bringing in A'nian somehow would be fun, but not at all necessary.

I love the tenderness and the healing of the relationship between Xiaoyao and Tushan Jing. Would love to see them exploring the world post-canon. I would prefer you do not give them children.

Also I know in the series itself, Tushan Jing knew Xiaoyao was a woman all along, but in my mind he did not know she was one until she revealed it. He still fell in love of course. Tushan Jing bisexual king, is very important to me. I would love to see that explored.

Thank you so much! I hope some of my prompts have inspired you. 💖
