Scarlett Investigates - Part 1
Scarlett Investigates
Scarlett O’Connell hadn’t expected to be investigating a sabotaged play. She just wanted to learn to improve her art while investigating minor campus mysteries. She had made some backdrop pieces for the campus production of The Tempest and had arrived at the college’s theater to find something wrong. The stage was a mess. She saw that the curtain had fallen completely. “Something’s not right here,” she said as she fidgeted with her tablet.

“It’s a curse,” someone said nearby,

Scarlett turned, and saw that it was Daniel Fields, a theater student on her floor. “What do you mean?” she asked, as she fidgeted with a keyring in her pocket.

“Minor incidents have been occurring all week.”

“All week?”

“Yes, mostly broken props, but now the curtain has fallen,” Daniel answered.

“Sounds like sabotage,” Scarlett said as she sketched the scene.

“What do you mean?”

“That these incidents aren’t just the normal chaos of theater.”

“How can you be sure?” Daniel asked with skepticism.

“I’m not certain,” Scarlett admitted. She was certain, something about the curtain having fallen and Daniel admission of minor incidents, piqued her interest and she knew she wanted to find out what was going on. “I’m going to investigate,” she declared.

“Wait, Scarlett,” Daneil said as she ran off. “You can’t just…” He paused as she dashed through a door backstage.

Backstage, Scarlett wondered where to start. “I’ll need to know who’s involved in the production. But who would have the cast sheet, and would it be comprehensive?” she asked as she absentmindedly sketched the scene around her.

“You there!”

Scarlett turned. “Um, I’m investigating,” she said to the girl who was coming towards her.

“You shouldn’t be here!”

“I know, but I can help!”

“How?” the other girl asked, as she tossed her long brown hair back like a supermodel.

“I notice things that others don’t. I’m Scarlett by the way.” Scarlett then held out her hand.

“You don’t know who I am, Scarlett?” the other asked in faux surprise.

“Should I?” Scarlett asked with a slight bounce, her eyes wide.

“I’m the lead actress of this production, playing Ariel.”

“Still no clue.”

“I’m Victoria Calder! I can’t believe you don’t know who I am.

“Oh, that Victoria Calder!” Scarlett said. She had indeed heard of the theater major who was known for her diva attitude and epic tantrums when her demands weren’t met in a timely manner. “Sorry, I hadn’t put face to name.”

“Unbelievable!” Victoria said with a huff. “Still, Scarlett.”

Scarlett’s attention had wandered.

Victoria snapped her fingers. “Hey!”

“Sorry. ADHD,” Scarlett said.

“Right. You shouldn’t be here.”

“You said that before. But I can notice things others miss.”

“You seem sincere,” Victoria said. “But only if I supervise you.”

“No.”

“What was that?” Victoria responded, tears coming to her eyes.

“I said no,” Scarlett said, not wanting Victoria to be a possible millstone.

“I can help!” Victoria added with her voice raised and actual tears beginning to flow.

“No!”

“Victoria balled her hands into fists and started to screech.”

Scarlett resisted the urge to block her ears . It was too much. ‘Not an overload, not now!’ she thought. “Alright,” she said. “You can help.”

Victoria calmed down and wiped her tears with a handkerchief embroidered with her initials. “Thanks,” she said.

Scarlett was still little overwhelmed. “What have you noticed so far?” she asked as she fidgeted with her sketchbook.

“Some things,” Victoria answered. “We can talk in my dressing room.”

“That would be good.”

Victoria’s dressing room was chaotic, but it was quieter than the backstage complex outside. Scarlett relaxed a bit, although she was still overstimulated.

She sat on one of the side chairs. “Now, what do you know?”

Victoria began. “It was during the initial read through. There was a loud crash that interrupted us as we reached the scene where Caliban recruits the two sailors.”

Scarlett sketched the scene, showing Caliban as bestial. “Maybe someone is objecting to the way Caliban is portrayed,” she blurted.

“No differently than the way the Bard originally wrote it. Just’s not jump to conclusions!”

“Sorry. I was musing aloud. Something I do. I don’t have much of a filter,” Scarlett admitted as she tapped her stylus against her tablet.

“Must you do that?”

“Do what?”

“The fidgeting,” Victoria exclaimed.

“Sorry. It helps me focus.”

Psalm 102
Lament
A prayer expressing deep sorrow, pain or confession to God. Uniiquely, it is a God-centred cry that moves from distress towards trust in God's promises.

'To cry is human. But to lament is Christian.' - Mark Vroegop

vs 1 - 11
The Psalmist talking about -
Lament is reliant on being honest with God.
Lament being repentance.
Hope in God must be bigger than the distress

vs 12 - 22
When our prayer is a prayer of lament, we will start to feel what God is feeling.

vs 23 - 28
Lament is far more thana good old winge or complaint.
Lament is God centered.

Enables us to hold onto hope of something better whilst living in the pain.

Dear Candy Hearts (2025)

Dear Candy Hearts artist/author,

This will be my second time participating. My AO3 is Haro. If someone feels so inclined, treats and gifts are also enabled on my account.

I'm a millennial lesbian living in the midwest US with my long time girlfriend and our menagerie of kitty cats. Cats are a welcome addition to ANY prompt I give. As far as I'm concerned all my faves are cat lovers, even if they don't know it yet.

Non-series specific likes: Found families, friends to lovers, mutually requited pining, teamwork, equality in relationships, mutual protection, physical affection, battle couples, home being a person and not a place, established relationship fic, angst and hurt comfort with a happy ending (I'm soft at heart), transfem headcanons, dancing, characters in fancy or special clothes, anything with cats. I'm also a sucker for stories where characters triumph against impossible odds, as well as stories where free will > fate.

Dislikes: noncon, dubcon, cheating, drawn out miscommunication, major character death (except what already exists in canon). Unrequited relationships, love triangles, stories about one partner outliving the other by a lot, descriptions of pregnancy, detailed descriptions of baby rearing, kids as a focal point, omegaverse, anything where a major character dislikes cats.

I'm also not really interested in smut fic as a gift. Allusions to sex, mentions of it, sensuality, and fade to black are very welcomed though!

Amyway, here's my prompts! I tend toward quite shippy requests.

永夜星河 | Love Game in Eastern Fantasy (TV) [Ling Miaomiao/Mu Sheng | Mu Ziqi/Xia Ziqi]

I am desperate for anything post-canon with our Miaomiao and Ziqi. There's so little of it out there. I'm so into these two right now! They have my heart. If you can't do post-canon, any established relationship within the timeline of the story would also be loved. Perhaps something while they're traveling together to look for his memories?

You are welcome to include any other LGIEF characters, as well as Mu Yao/Liu Fuyi as a ship.

For post-canon, I'd prefer something that isn't a reunion story, but instead takes place once they've already encountered each other at the book signing and continued their relationship. They've started their next journey together, and even if it isn't quite as full of adventure and peril as their previous one, it's still wonderful. I love anything that throws back to their time in the parallel world together and homages it, or you could also go all out and somehow bring supernatural elements to the current era. Just have fun!

Things I love with these two:

-While his journey was about self-love; our fragile, insecure Ziqi is never going to lose that aspect of him entirely. I like a Ziqi that still has some insecurity about himself, his personal worth, and of course, about if he can be the partner Miaomiao deserves (he absolutely can be). He's much healthier, happier, and more confident in himself, but he's still human.

-The sweet, teasing, and fond banter they have.

-I'd prefer no all out smut, but fade to black and implications are fine. I think if they are early in a sexual relationship, it's important for our Ziqi to be just as inexperienced as he was as Mu Sheng. Miaomiao also comes across as quite shy.

Here's a few letter exclusive series specific ideas:

1- Body worship of any kind, especially with regard to Ziqi, who is much more a normal guy in this world than the cool, badass super strong demon hunter he used to be. And toward Miaomiao, just because she's Miaomiao and she deserves to be adored.

2- Anything regarding Ziqi's illness! Although the surgery for moyamoya disease alleviates most chronic symptoms, and for most people, they just have to take daily medication, it's still true that he has a disability and that it's had a deep impact on him his entire life. Make it sweet. Maybe even explore some of the things he can do now that he's had his operation, but that he's still hesitant about because his kneejerk reaction is that he's not allowed to do any strenuous activity since it had been that way most of his life. You can ALSO explore how his illness parallels his half demon condition in Catching Demons, if you'd like.

3- Miaomiao escaping her rotten work life. She deserves a better job. Maybe her time in Catching Demons and her reunion with Ziqi, as well as his encouragement, finally gives her the courage to demand more (Ziqi tells Miaomiao his courage was born because of her, so he can return the favor). Does she get a promotion? Does she find a better place to work? Does she go back to school to find her way into a career that she's more passionate about? It's up to you.
4-
Ziqi growing his hair out. Look, Ding Yuxi is a beautiful man, but that ponytail adds something extra, and I miss it. I think Miaomiao would agree.
5-
Anything where they reflect back on their journey in Catching Demons with both fondness and melancholy (they'd miss their friends and family in there, after all).

Series specific DNW: Please no other pairings for the characters but Miaomiao/Ziqi. I'm also not much of a fan of them finding reincarnations of Fuyi and Mu Yao (I'd rather them somehow reunite with the originals someday). Please nothing that involves Miaomiao doubting whether this Ziqi is the same as the Ziqi she fell in love with in the book.

Treats welcome.

淮水竹亭 | Love in Pavilion (TV) [Zhang Zheng/Anaran]

These wonderful, heartbreaking, tragic boys. Despite their very limited screentime, they really won my heart and nestled their way into it.

I'd love to see ANYTHING romantic with these two.

I think they would be so tender; quiet and devoted Anaran, and caring and attentive Zhang Zheng.

A fix it fic would be fantastic (you could do this however you'd like, but I AM partial to them running away with each other). Zhang Zheng will need a miracle cure from a deadly illness (and perhaps a cure to a poison, if the fix it happens after Zheng Zheng takes the poison that canonically kills him), so it would be great to see some lasting repercussions. Perhaps Zhang Zheng loses his martial arts abilities or is physically handicapped in some way? But he and Anaran are still able to live on, and they are more than content.

Qingmu Yuan can be mentioned as they both have feelings for her (and I imagine they'd worry about her), but I'd like the focus to be on them. Other characters from LIP can also make appearances if needed. For this ship, something like them taking a disciple in the future would be okay, but I'd rather not see them having children themselves.

Treats are welcome.

长相思 | Lost You Forever (TV) [Xiaoyao/Tushan Jing and/or Tushan Jing & Xiang Liu]

The only romantic pairing I'm interested in is Xiaoyao and Tushan Jing. I'm always a fan of anything gentle with them.

Otherwise, I'm interested in Xiang Liu and Tushan Jing's dynamic, so something non-romantic with them could be really neat. I think they could be friends in another life.

As far as other side characters, bringing in A'nian somehow would be fun, but not at all necessary.

I love the tenderness and the healing of the relationship between Xiaoyao and Tushan Jing. Would love to see them exploring the world post-canon. I would prefer you do not give them children.

Also I know in the series itself, Tushan Jing knew Xiaoyao was a woman all along, but in my mind he did not know she was one until she revealed it. He still fell in love of course. Tushan Jing bisexual king, is very important to me. I would love to see that explored.

Thank you so much! I hope some of my prompts have inspired you. 💖

In an Effort to Palate Cleanse After Today ...

... it's the return of the Music Meme ...

... and it's Day 17.

A song about being 17:

Oh, was there ever going to be any other song?

Even though I first heard the song well after I left 17 behind, Janis Ian's song spoke to me in a general sense. I understood it, even though I hadn't suffered what she undoubtedly suffered during her own school days. I'd suffered smaller heartbreaks in high school, for the crime of being weird. Besides, her writing was beautiful. So of course, I loved it. Teenagers have it tough, y'all.

Years later, I learned she was a science fiction fan, and she wrote a song about that, and put it to the music for "At Seventeen." Here it is. (I don't know if it was written for SFWA, or for the Nebula Awards; Geri, if you're out there, can you tell me? It was the title of her rewritten song, "Welcome Home," which she repeats more than once in the lyrics, that hit me harder than "At Seventeen" ever did. That's what I felt when I discovered SFF fandom; I'd found a home.

Even later, I had the chance to listen to her live when she played a gig in Evanston. Afterwards, I spoke briefly to her about how much I loved that, especially the mention of Cordwainer Smith, one of my favorite weirdly beautiful writers. It turns out that she was also a Smith fan. That was as much a gift to me as "Welcome Home" was

Challenge #1

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I haven't actively participated in a fandom in a while (except for a drabble every now and then). Maybe I'm looking for ideas for new fandoms. Maybe I just want to see what other people are excited about.

Maybe I just want to do my part to keep communities strong here on DW.

My New Year's Resolution is to do a cheese quest this year. I have already tried three new-to-me cheeses so far. The best one was the white cheddar with dill. I will be journaling about all of the cheeses in a notebook and, perhaps, in my DW journal.

I post almost everything under lock as I'm a teacher in a hostile state, but I will probably add you.

2026 Snowflake Challenge #2 – Pets of Fandom (or: puppies on tour)
I don't actually have any pets, and haven't for... nearly twenty years now. So this challenge sent me rummaging around my fandoms rather than my living room.

I briefly considered writing about Jannik's cat, Yeti - especially since we finally got a picture of him during Cincinnati - but the more I thought about it, the more it felt a little disingenuous. Jannik is very protective of his personal life, and anything that isn't directly related to tennis performance tends to stay carefully private. Enjoying the existence of Yeti from afar feels fine; dissecting it less so.

What I kept coming back to instead was something I genuinely love about the North American swing: the way tournaments often partner with local shelters and rescues, bringing in adoptable puppies and dogs for players to meet. It's good publicity, yes, but it's also genuinely lovely, and it reliably produces some of the softest, most joyful content of the season.

There's something about watching elite athletes, usually framed as machines of focus and discipline, sitting on the floor making kissy noises at a puppy that is deeply grounding. It also has a way of reminding you just how young so many of these players are. Stripped of competition and expectations, they're just... kids with dogs )
(and, as I'm realising, some of these are from Roland Garros!)

And for me, personally, last year delivered some particularly excellent examples.

At Cincinnati, we got Darren with a puppy ) - all warmth and ease, completely at home with a small, wiggly creature in his arms and a smile that killed me utterly DED
(also, the man posts pictures of his own dogs to Instagram, including him asleep with them ) So. Really. What's a llama to do?!)

[edit] OH! Also, this lovely pupper that Darren and Jannik had been playing with actually got adopted by one of the security guards at the tournament, who changed the pupper's name to Jannik!

And then at the US Open, we got Simone with a puppy ), which was... exactly as soft and quietly devastating as you'd expect.
(Simone, on the other hand, posts pictures of his cat ) like a proper millennial 🤣

Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries: 03 January 2026 (Advent Devotional)
DANGER

Now when they [the wise men] had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the Child, to destroy Him.” And he rose and took the Child and His mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.” (Matthew 2:13-15)

That must have been a scary night. I can see Joseph waking Mary, whispering so they wouldn’t wake Jesus. They would have packed as quickly as possible by the light of a lamp—maybe even leaving some things behind. And then the three of them would be on the road.

Good parents don’t mess around when their child is in danger. And God didn’t mess around when we were in danger—when He saw that we had turned away from Him and put ourselves into the devil’s power. Even at the very beginning of the world, He promised to send us a Savior (see Genesis 3:15).

And then He came Himself to be that Savior, to rescue us. Because He loved us so, He was born among us as a human baby, Jesus. He put His own life, death, and resurrection between us and ruin. What greater love could there be?

WE PRAY: Dear Lord, You saw me in danger and You came to me. Thank You. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

  • How far would you go to protect someone you loved?
  • What do you think it was like for this family, living as refugees in Egypt?
  • Why would God choose a life that involved danger and trouble, even as a young child?

Advent Devotions were written by Dr. Kari Vo.

New Genres in the New Year
This week's Book Blogger Hop question is Which genre are you eager to jump into more this year, and what draws you to it? and for me, it's more about finding my way back to old favourites, rather than something new

I want to read more horror and science fiction

As a teen and into my early adulthood, horror was everything to me. I grew up on Anne Rice and Stephen King — the lush, gothic obsession of Rice, the slow-creeping dread and very human horror of King

Sci‑fi has always pulled me in with scale.

I love big ideas and big worlds, but especially what it feels like to live inside them - the people, the found families, the hope that keeps flickering even when things are strange or frightening. I enjoy hard sci‑fi just as much as space opera, and I’ve always had a soft spot for stories that take the science seriously without losing their sense of wonder.

I've dipped a toe back in recently and really enjoyed Andy Weir, which reminded me how much I love this genre when it’s grounded and curious. And sitting patiently (or maybe not so patiently) on my TBR are Becky Chambers and Martha Wells, both of whom feel like exactly the kind of character‑driven sci‑fi I’m craving right now.

A lot of this love was shaped by what I watched as much as what I read. Stargate, Star Trek, and Doctor Who all taught me to associate science fiction with optimism, connection, and possibility.

Horror is a slightly different pull.

I grew up on Anne Rice and Stephen King, and I think that shaped my tastes more than I realised. What stayed with me wasn’t just fear, but atmosphere - stories that linger, that sit heavy in the chest, that care about obsession, grief, belief, and the slow creep of dread rather than constant shocks.

That’s probably still what I want now. Horror that unsettles instead of overwhelms, that lets emotion and character do as much work as the scares. I don’t yet know what that looks like in contemporary horror, and that uncertainty is part of the appeal. I've been really enjoying Mira Grant and T Kingfisher recently.

But I'm excited to start exploring both genres again and see what kind of stories are waiting for me!
