I've been able to avoid SU wank and people hating on pairings as well. Even the little I've seen isn't too bad.

I don't get the hate on Japis. I do, in a way, but their relationship is interesting and complicated. No one knows how Lapis got stuck in the mirror or why. She might have been a serious threat - she's provided to be damn powerful by taking on all the Crystal Gems, pretty much winning sorta AND keeping Jasper chained up for so long. I've seen people accuse her of being evil/a bully but her actions seem pretty protective of both herself and Steven. As well with Jasper, people have chalked her up to be this horrible bully/abuser and she got what she deserved, but I think they're wrong. I think she's more the 'bark is worse than her bite' kind. Lapis overpowered her easily and Garnet whooped her ass. We also never see her be cruel to Lapis in any way - she asks her to fuse with her, not force her or even be violent. In the end, imo, they both aren't what you think and this dynamic is what fascinates me about the pairing. Anyone who is anti them has written them off as horrible people without fully examining them and to use abuse survivors to 'prove' their point or whatever is ignorant.

Basically from what I've seen of Pearl hate, if you have realistic unlikeable flaws then you're immediately horribly abusive and problematic and gross and whatever term tumblr overuses.

I do agree with you, btw, but I can't find it in myself to be too irritated with this fandom's crazy anti-shipper faction since I've been in fandoms that had it MUCH worse. (Harry Potter and Bleach are the first examples that come to mind.)

Yea that whole "Your ship is problematic"-shtick has got to go*. Apparently people can't enjoy slightly (or very) fucked-up ships anymore without being RL proponents of rape and/or abuse. And yeah, shouting at actual abuse survivors happens a lot in these discussions. It's a weird new type of making others feel bad about liking something, and I hope it goes away again.

(*By which I don't mean recognizing fucked-up things as fucked-up, which is totes fine.)

Ugh I know.
And the worst part is the hypocrisy. They'll scream all day about how awful the ship is and if you ship it you're literally "romanticizing abuse" or some other bullcrap. But the second you mention to be an abuse survivor, they'll automatically let you off the hook because apparently it's only okay to ship "abusive" ships if you've been through abuse yourselF. @_@
Like wtf ew. Try to wrap your head around that.

I've also had a few artists I follow make side japis art blogs just so they wouldn't have to expose their art to anyone who didn't want to see it, and were generally pretty respectful about it. And yet they still somehow got a crapload of hate mail and some artists even ended up deleting their accounts. But considering lapis is the like the biggest notp in the whole fandom, barley anybody cares or notices lol.

Yeah, this shit goes pretty far sometimes. A couple of years ago in the Sherlock fandom, there was some Reapersun (a popular artist) wank that got really out of hand. For people outside of the fandom or who missed it, basically, she drew a comic that could reasonably be interpreted as being non-con and some people freaked out to the point that they believed this meant she supports rape irl and harassed her pretty severely about it. Most of the people who pointed out that it was fucked up to bully a person like that were also shouted down and things devolved to the point where anti-Reapersun folks actually passed around a list of people who supported Reapersun and accused them of supporting rape and actually being rapists themselves. The really awful part comes from the fact that numerous people on the list were abuse and rape survivors themselves and made that clear in their posts that defended Reapersun and resulted in them being included in the list. I can't even imagine how upsetting it would be to be a rape survivor and have a bunch of assholes circulate a list that claims you're a rapist yourself just because you think someone shouldn't be bullied because of the art they draw. I've seen and put up with a lot of shit from various fandoms, but that's still one of the things that sickens me the most.

I know the Sherlock fandom was obnoxious but jesus fucking christ.

I've had the whole "here's a big list of people who support this pairing and that makes them bad!!" thing happen before (mcu fandom in case your wondering) but it wasn't that extreme lmao.

It fortunately died down reasonably quickly but, yeah, no matter how often I try to convince myself that it was some kind of weird extended hallucination, it definitely happened. The people who put the list together were so smug about it too and positively didn't give a shit when people brought up the fact that actual rape survivors were on the list. It was truly and genuinely disturbing behavior

And lol lemme guess, the peope who made the list and harassed all of those users totally got away with it and were never held to the consequences of their actions. And today, almost nobody ever mentions it or brings it up.

I find the people who like to shout about abuse the loudest in fandom are the ones with no understanding of it. It kind of infuriates me. Abuse isn't about a person making a mistake or having a disagreement, it's a method of control.

Plus it just so happens there's a pattern of all my lesbian ships(not lapis japser btw) get accused of being abusive... gee I wonder what's happening there.

But yeah, I wish tumblr would chill out with the abuse accusations. It's not helping anyone.

Ugh I know. They THINK they're being progressive and doing abuse victims a favor, but when in reality they're actually just trivializing abuse and making themsleves look idiotic and ignorant.
If I have to see one more passive aggressive "It's okay to have Pearl be your favorite character...but you HAVE to acknowledge that she's abusive and awful otherwise you support abuse and you're a terrible human being!! uwu" post I'm gonna go crazy.

The people who say Pearl is abusive piss me off so much, as an abuse survivor especially. The instant she showed a FLAW she all of a sudden is an abusive piece of shit? Fucking terrible.

And I like Jasper too! I love me some villains and I think her design is very cool for a female villain especially. Apparently that is also not something I should do as an abuse survivor either. The whole thing is so annoying.

I mean, I agree but can also see how some people might run into doing that because a. Pearl herself certainly romanticizes it (though I think that its not the narrative's pov, just her own) and b. its hard to get a grasp on them since we have only seen their past relationship in glimpses, and presently Pearl has still not dealt with her loss and seems not to be handling grief well, which isn't healthy but is certainly understandable.

The narrative itself is handling it very well to be honest, seems to be stating pretty loudly that this shit's unhealthy. Even their fusion, the actual gemstone rainbow quartz, it's artificial.

Pearl's flaws make her an interesting character, but as of now she's kind of a terrible person. She can of course get better, and will probably be going that direction eventually, but something major's going to have to happen to knock her out of that mindset.

I'm surprised Pearl/Rose Quartz shot up in popularity after "Sworn to the Sword" and "We Need to Talk" because all I took away from those episodes is that Pearl's fixation on Rose is not even remotely healthy and it only seems to bring out the worst in her. If anything it'd be better for her to move on.
