if someone can't appreciate this song then they need to get a taste check.

Ahhh, I love this song! <3

I used to fall asleep to this song all the time. There's something really soothing about it to me. I loooove it. So now I'm listening to it on loop. Thanks anon!

(Anonymous) 2013-11-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed... I don't understand why it's a secret.

Well, it's certainly effective as an earworm. *toddles off to YouTube*

This is one of my all time favorites and possibly my absolute favorite by Gordon Lightfoot. It's such a hauntingly beautiful song. And I'll need to listen to it on repeat later tonight.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-05 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I once had a dream I was cheating on my husband with a young Gordon Lightfoot. Like, in his 20s young. NGL, I remember it being pretty hot sex.

We are a Canadian household, so YMMV.

You and my old philosophy teacher both, nonnie.

He spent whole class sessions on this song.

"Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings in the rooms of her ice-water mansions.
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams - the islands and bays are for sportsmen.
Farther below, Lake Ontario takes in what Lake Erie can send her.
And the iron boats go, as the mariners all know, with the winds of November remembered."

It's all incredible writing, but the line about Superior gives me chills every time.

Ahhh, I love this song!

Go away haters who think this "isn't fandom". Plenty of people here like the song; ergo, we are fans. It's music. It's media with artists and an audience. Just because it's not relevant TO YOU doesn't make it irrelevant to fandom as a whole.

I love this song, but now it's sort of bittersweet because it just always reminds me of the HMS Bounty sinking last fall :(

this is a dumb secret and I hope you're embarrassed

One of the songs of my childhood :)
I usually avoid it, though, because of the sad, but it's a magnificent song.

(Anonymous) 2013-11-05 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
I agree it's a great song, but when it comes to Gordon I much prefer Ballad of the Yarmouth Castle. I alsways end up feeling so sad for the ship.

Does any one know where the love of God goes
when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
they may have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

This old Michigander thanks you, OP, for the reminder that it's time to dust off the old ballad and give her another listen.

I think I'll dig up "City of New Orleans" too, while I'm at it.
