Eh, don't beat yourself up. Fandom is supposed to be fun, If springboarding from canon into headcanon makes you happy, and if revisiting the canon ruins the fun for you, then ... just don't look back.

I enjoy the parallels between all four to be honest. It is just so interesting to see how each mirror each other. And in the case of fanfiction, how their pairings mirror each other.
