No one would read your stories if you did that. With original stories, besides the work of writing, there's the work of promotion. Even in traditional publishing, writers are now expected to promote their own work.

But then doesn't that mean you're lying to your readers? I mean, if you're writing what are effectively original characters but slapping the canon characters' names on them, you're deceiving the readers who are reading your stories expecting them to be about the canon characters.

Either write fanfic or write original stories, don't try to mash them together.

I take it you are not familiar with the Teen Wolf fandom? Eventually I stopped watching the canon because a) it was awful and b) fanon outgrew canon by leaps and bounds.

Plus there are AUs and alternative timelines and all sorts of things. No matter how IC you try to make it, knotting fic will throw a wrench in anyone's plans. I, for one, am about fandom being fun. I don't write, but I'd rather read a beautiful AU than a crudely told IC fic any day.

I wouldn't know if it's lying or not - the fics I post are as canon-compliant as they can be considering the pairings. That means I have the show playing or the book in front of me as I edit.
