Re: Pairings That Fandom Soured For You
(Anonymous) 2014-04-26 12:57 am (UTC)(link)And then I went to SDCC, and a SQ fan proceeded to make the best part of 2000+ people uncomfortable by asking the showrunners when they would acknowledge that, even if they didn't want to admit it, they'd written SQ as though it was canon, the actors had acted their parts as though it was canon, so when were they going to admit that it was canon? It was really awkward, especially since the writers explained they had no intention of ever making it canon--they weren't rude, but it kind of soured the Q&A.
And then part of the SQ fandom apparently went crazy and started sending death threats to the actors and creative team because they (and all the fans who didn't ship it) were all bigoted homophobes for not writing/acting Emma and Regina as an awesome lesbian couple, and I went from "SQ isn't my thing" to "wow, I didn't know I was a homophobe, I guess being anti-one gay ship trumps being pro LGBT rights," and from ignoring SQ to disliking it.
Even though I still don't ship SQ, I feel kind of bad for the sane shippers, because the writers' stated reasons for not making them a couple were "Regina tried to kill Emma and is the reason she grew up without a family." Which is fine. Those are both reasons I don't ship them, alongside Regina's rape of Graham. Except apparently the creators are fine with Emma and Hook as a couple, despite the fact that Hook tried to kill Emma, and, before his rapid-fire redemption that took all of 5 days, he would have killed Emma, her family, and everyone in the town they lived in, and made comments that implied he wasn't opposed to rape. "I've had many men's wives." "My men need companionship." Why is Hook different from Regina?
I still don't ship SQ. But at least if Regina and Emma developed feelings for each other from where they are now in canon, Regina wouldn't start "being good" for Emma's sake. If Hook had laid off being a sleazy bullying asshole for a season, and then developed romantic feelings for Emma, I probably would have been fine with it. Instead it's like the writers flipped a switch at the end of season 2.
I know the writers intend Hook's redemption to be sincere, but I can't buy it. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, and for Hook to reveal he's been plotting something nasty. It makes more sense than his sudden "love" for Emma, and a shit-ton more sense than Emma returning his feelings. Emma knocked someone unconscious in the pilot episode because he'd run out on his family. Hook ran off with a married woman, challenged her crippled husband to a duel, made her husband think she was going to be gang-raped to death, and then sold the child of the woman he professed to love to a psychotic teenager. If Emma knew any of that, I can't see her being with him.
The SwanQueen fandom pissed me off and still does obnoxious shit from time to time. But now I think I'd rather see SQ develop from where the show is now, than watch Hook and Emma's "romance" warp Emma's character anymore.
