Pairings That Fandom Soured For You

Inspired by secret four. What are some pairings that shippers and fandom soured or turned you off of?

Most of SnK's juggernauts, honestly.

Only one I could stand is Ymir/Christa and even how the fans went about it soured me some.

It hasn't really soured me on the pairing but some HG/Myka crazies on Tumblr soured me on the fandom. Technically, it was only one crazy but that crazy had these other lesser crazies agreeing about how she was totally in the right for being a rude SOB to some Pete/Myka shipper. I can so do without that.

I dipped my toe into the TW/Sterek fandom and then turned tail when I saw that some of them are really *nasty*. I think they're probably just as bad as the rest of TW fandom though, because I've seen some assholeish stuff in the anti-Sterek camp, too.

Professor X/Magneto. Thanks a lot XMFC fandom; you soured me on one of the ships I loved before I even knew what shipping was. I didn't think that was possible.

Cass/Dean from Supernatural, Steve/Tony from The Avengers and Sherlock/John BBC!Sherlock, so the three "big" ones I guess? And I'm not really in any of the fandoms, just the tiny bit I see is enough...

Ichiruki. I never really shipped it, but I was ok with it. Now I can't stand it at all. It's just *everywhere*, even when you just search one of the characters names ichiruki fic or art will be within the top 5 results, and a lot of the shippers act like it's genuinely canon that they're together.

Harry/Hermione. Any big ship in that fandom, really, but H/Hr in particular. The ship wars just really turned me off of HP fic after a while and I never got back into it.

Jack/Daniel on SG1. So much potential there but it all seemed d so samey and usually boring and OOC.

Kyouko/Sayaka... from Dangan Ronpa, not Madoka.

I can't tell if it's gotten popular "ironically" because most of the posts about it look like they're trying to be stupid on purpose. But they're weird and annoying either way. So thanks for making me hate a pairing that wouldn't even be on my radar otherwise, fandom.

Vincent/Sophia from Last Exile. Deciding to try some Vincent/Sophia fic when I couldn't find much Alex/Sophia fic the first time I went looking was a huge mistake. Every one I found was basically the same plot: Lets find a way to completely remove Sophia's agency and force her to marry Vincent when she still clearly in love with Alex!
While I still OT3 Alex/Sophia/Vincent, and the three are my favorite LE characters ever, Vincent/Sophia squicks the hell out of me now.

Alistair/Warden, any version. I mean, I still ship them, but I won't do so openly. The fangirls have kind of quieted down since the game came out in 2011, but it used to be that they were so loud, obnoxious, and just prone to violent outbursts (e.g., the classic "Alistair never loved you!" snow globe).

Right now, the issue is the people on tumblr who declare they HATE Cousland Warden and anyone who ships them, and they usually manage to fit in real life race issues into this to justify why they can hate you, you racist. But since I can't deny an annoying portion of Cousland Wardens kinda just did it for the fairy tale fantasy and won't shut up about it, I don't blame them...but it made me hate every other Origin besides maybe Mage. ESPECIALLY dwarf ones, Jesus. Good god, you never met a group of people that just thought they were just more emotionally intelligent than you because they picked an unpopular choice.

Johnlock, to an extent. I keep thinking it's a pairing I'm interested in, but then I read a fic or two and it just doesn't do anything for me. I can't tell if the fandom soured Destiel for me, or the show did. I've read some good Destiel fic, but most of it is pretty boring and unimaginative. (Compare to Merlin BBC, which has really great, fun and creative fic and I've A LOT of it.)

Well if I ship something it's because of the source material so fandom can't really turn me off of that. But sometimes I hate fandom's interpretation of a couple so I just won't follow anything they do with it. And I keep my ship in my head, all alone.

Phoenix/Edgeworth and Franziska/Adrian from Ace Attorney.

I don't have a problem with the pairings or with people enjoying them, but I'm tired of a certain percentage of the fandom acting like the pairings are canon. Neither is. And going by canon events in each of the games, I seriously doubt either will ever be.

Swanqueen. I didn't like the ship, since I'm not a big fan of foe-yay ships and Regina had tried to kill Emma multiple times, including as a baby. I knew SQ was kind of the fandom juggernaut, but I just went on not shipping Emma or Regina with anyone.

And then I went to SDCC, and a SQ fan proceeded to make the best part of 2000+ people uncomfortable by asking the showrunners when they would acknowledge that, even if they didn't want to admit it, they'd written SQ as though it was canon, the actors had acted their parts as though it was canon, so when were they going to admit that it was canon? It was really awkward, especially since the writers explained they had no intention of ever making it canon--they weren't rude, but it kind of soured the Q&A.

And then part of the SQ fandom apparently went crazy and started sending death threats to the actors and creative team because they (and all the fans who didn't ship it) were all bigoted homophobes for not writing/acting Emma and Regina as an awesome lesbian couple, and I went from "SQ isn't my thing" to "wow, I didn't know I was a homophobe, I guess being anti-one gay ship trumps being pro LGBT rights," and from ignoring SQ to disliking it.

Even though I still don't ship SQ, I feel kind of bad for the sane shippers, because the writers' stated reasons for not making them a couple were "Regina tried to kill Emma and is the reason she grew up without a family." Which is fine. Those are both reasons I don't ship them, alongside Regina's rape of Graham. Except apparently the creators are fine with Emma and Hook as a couple, despite the fact that Hook tried to kill Emma, and, before his rapid-fire redemption that took all of 5 days, he would have killed Emma, her family, and everyone in the town they lived in, and made comments that implied he wasn't opposed to rape. "I've had many men's wives." "My men need companionship." Why is Hook different from Regina?

I still don't ship SQ. But at least if Regina and Emma developed feelings for each other from where they are now in canon, Regina wouldn't start "being good" for Emma's sake. If Hook had laid off being a sleazy bullying asshole for a season, and then developed romantic feelings for Emma, I probably would have been fine with it. Instead it's like the writers flipped a switch at the end of season 2.

I know the writers intend Hook's redemption to be sincere, but I can't buy it. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, and for Hook to reveal he's been plotting something nasty. It makes more sense than his sudden "love" for Emma, and a shit-ton more sense than Emma returning his feelings. Emma knocked someone unconscious in the pilot episode because he'd run out on his family. Hook ran off with a married woman, challenged her crippled husband to a duel, made her husband think she was going to be gang-raped to death, and then sold the child of the woman he professed to love to a psychotic teenager. If Emma knew any of that, I can't see her being with him.

The SwanQueen fandom pissed me off and still does obnoxious shit from time to time. But now I think I'd rather see SQ develop from where the show is now, than watch Hook and Emma's "romance" warp Emma's character anymore.

The Steve/Tony shippers after Iron Man 3 were insufferable, and given how OOC most Steve/Tony fic was prior to that...I like the pairing enough that I still read some Steve/Tony fic, but now I'm a lot pickier about what I read. I still love Steve/Tony/Pepper, though, but now I'm more of a diehard Steve/Bucky shipper. (Which means right now is a fantastic time in fanfic for me!)

Hannibal/Will. I kiiiinda shipped it a little when the show started, in a messed-up sort of way. But now it's everywhere, and the fandom's insistence that it's canon is getting on my nerves. (The show itself did a pretty good job of killing the pairing for me, too - after seeing how terribly Will was treated, there was no way I could ship it.)

Also John/Sherlock. Partly fandom being annoying, partly a realization that the show itself was terrible, halfway through S2.

Tony/Bruce shippers. Good god, the OOC-ness runs abound in the fics for that pairing.

"Spirk," because "Spirk."

And just about any pairing where people seriously debate "canon" and "endgame." If it's not a tiny bit cracky, there's not much point to it.

Ghirahim/Link from Legend of Zelda - Skyward Sword, although not AS much any more. When the game first came out, a group of fans came up with this AU where Link was defeated and taken prisoner by Ghirahim and Demise, and while that's a neat premise, it basically just devolved into rape rape rape rape stockholm syndrome that isn't actually addressed as stockholm syndrome and is just seen as 'oh but link fell in love with them it's okay' rape rape rape weird out of place fluff rape rape isn't it ROMANTIC U GAIZ.

I'm still a little uncomfortable with the ship, especially the few people completely ignoring the fact that Ghirahim canonically threatened to torture Link until he deafened himself with his own screams (that, or people who say that, oh, he was just expressing his ~true feelings~ for Link!), but most Ghiralink fans have kind of... renounced that AU and kind of pretend it never existed, heh. Most fans are fine, it was just. That AU that killed it for ages.

Pretty much all pairings that involve characters that now appear in the MCU and X-Men movieverse. Because most fics are movie-based even when it's tagged as comics. I miss my old time comics pairings.

Mako/Gamagoori was a fun and fluffy ship that I could enjoy while still being all for Ryuko/Mako. Then KLK was over, and hoooooo boy did everything get stupid. Suddenly you're either ignoring the obvious and erasing a nonsexualized lesbian couple or you're ignoring the obvious and ignoring all the interactions between Mako and Gamagoori.
