3DS help

[personal profile] inthecorner 2014-04-27 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I might've damaged my 3DS.

So, I've been playing Bravely Default lately and, for those who don't know, there is a system where you're basically building a town so you can buy extra rare items but each building takes a while to build at first (like, 5 hours or so) and the clock only runs while the game was on. At one point, I was going to a movie but instead of turning it off, I plugged it in so the building would at least be finished by the time I get back.

The problem is, I completely forgot to turn it off when I got back. For a week. Yeah. I'm stupid.

So, when I finally remember, the game had frozen and it took about a minute to turn off and now takes a long time to load up. And, the bigger problem, it now randomly disconnects from games, even the ones not downloaded.

From what I looked up, it sounds like a problem with the SD card, and I'll need to figure out where to buy a new one (better than buying a whole new 3DS anyway). But I was wondering if anyone else had any advice?

Sorry, just to clarify. You're saying you left the 3DS in sleep mode + plugged in to a power source for a week and now it has problems playing games? Just wondering because I've also left my 3DS in sleep mode for days on end (also for Bravely Default lol) and I'm wondering if I should be more cautious about it in the future.

At least the SD card is generic so it should be easy to find a replacement. Is your warranty still intact? Nintendo will fix it for free (as long as they don't think it's your fault).

You might need to be more cautious, judging on what the anon below me said. Yeah, SD cards doesn't seem to be hard to buy but I'm not sure how to check my warranty. I doubt it's still intact though.

It sounds like the SD card might have overheated. When I used to play games on my Wii a lot, I'd leave my SD card and GCN memory cards plugged in. My Wii is always plugged in, in that "standby" mode (when it's able to update itself but it's just kind of in sleep mode). The next time I went to play a game, a few days later, my memory cards had been corrupted and so had the SD card. Turns out they just kind of fried from being in the system for too long without getting the chance to cool off. I lost the data from games I'd had saved since the start of the GCN era, and the memory cards became unusable, so I had to buy new ones.

If you left your 3DS in sleep mode for that long, chances are that's what happened. The SD card, and possibly the internal memory itself, got way too hot from being in a plugged-in system for that long. 3DS's aren't designed to be powered up for longer than their usual battery life. I mean, most of us will do that when the stupid red lights start flashing at us in the middle of a game, but the system still needs regular breaks to calm down. If you had remembered to check on it when you were done with the movie, it would have been fine. The next morning too, even. But a week later just exhausted it. (Note that none of this is said in an accusing tone, I'm just giving "what if" scenarios)

I'd say get a new SD card. If that doesn't fix your problem, it's the internal memory, so you should have someone look at it.

Yeah, that sounds like what happened. I'm planning on getting a new SD card, at least they're not very expansive. Thanks for the advice.

Have you tried running out the battery and letting it sit (un-plugged in, not charging) for several hours? That's fixed my smartphone a few times.

I haven't, but I can try. Thanks.
