If you want to be a professional musician, it's extremely rare to start playing an instrument as an adult. There's a certain number of practice hours you have to have under your belt just to get the musculature and dexterity you need to play at that level, and it's difficult to do that as an adult compared with people who've been playing for a decade or two already. The latest professional musicians start is usually about 12. They can sometimes switch instruments, though!
