Welcome to the fold.

I can attest that it's possible to hoover up a majority of the important stuff in the old continuity and the new one, it's just very time-intensive in that there's a lot to read, especially if you're crazy like me and read all the old stuff from the late 80s up to New 52. Your best bets would be to pick a couple of the A-listers -- Batman and Superman are good choices -- and just follow them through the years. The idea is that you'll start picking up other books they happen to appear in, and the big crossover events are deliberately meant to entice readers of only one or two characters to read other books.
