The fun thing about loving DC comics is that it positively encourages headcanoning. Any event, relationship, or characterization probably has between four and ten different versions that are all equally canon/noncanon.

For example, Superman and Wonder Woman are my OTP because they're a perfect couple that will never, ever hook up or fall in love with each other, and that's not even tragic, it's just them being who they are. That's kind of perfect, to me.

Mind you, some folks tell me that in the current continuity, Supes and Wondy are a canon couple. I haven't been interested enough to find out, because nope. Fuck that. Didn't happen.

What I'm saying is welcome aboard, OP, there's a vast ocean of crazy to swim in and it's all fascinating. :)

OH! They meant actual DC. I did not even realize there were other pics of DC characters. I just saw a dude in armor and though DC stood for some kind of dragon/dungeon thing.

Unless you're talking about alternate universe versions of characters, I AM GOING TO HAVE TO DISAGREE.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Well there's at least two with pre and post Crisis

and I'm not a DC fan so I'm sure there are more than that

Yeah, characterizations have changed over time, although old characterizations have pretty much stayed in the past. I guess I just feel like there really is only one 'in-character' way to portray characters like Superman and his relationship with Lois, for example. Feel free to disagree with me, of course.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Superman/Lois is pretty deep and basic, yeah. That's one of the load-bearing structures of the DC Universe, so all we've got are about five good versions of that.

You got your Golden Age gutsy-reporter Lois with Kinda Scary Superman, you got your Silver Age duel of wits mindgames over Clark's identity, you got your post-Crisis slow-burn courtship with badass 80s Lois initially really hating Clark Kent, you got your 90s-00s married Lois and Clark (my personal favorite), and you got your Grant Morrison notion of the two of them being an eternal couple who will always be alive and together in some form.

Their dynamic is different in each one of these, and each one of them exists in that wonderful superhero superposition of canon/noncanon.

I don't say this to take anything away from the characters or your reading of them, just that, like I say, that's the joy of the fandom. There's a LOT of different versions of these folks.

Well, if you're fairly new to the fandom, I'm thinking you might not have read that little one-shot Aquaman origin story? The one where he gets his name (the Arthur Curry one, not Orin)? I personally love it to bits and would recommend it to anyone, but doubly so to you since you're a fan of the character! Can't remember what the comic in question was called though -- I think it might'v been an annual or special issue of some sort -- but if you'd like I can dig it up and check.

...Also, that one comic where he meets Superboy (Clark, not Kon-El) for the first time, and they have a silly little struggle -- where Superboy tries to prevent him from drowning -- is another thing you should read!
goodmode: (oh my goood)

DAMN EVERYONE WAS REALLY NICE ABOUT THIS

[personal profile] goodmode 2014-05-05 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
OP here! super belated but YEAH I'd love any/all recs you're willing to hand out aahh man!! If you can come up with the names, I can probably find them myself since I have a few sources. Really I'm just floundering for what to read (ho HO a fish joke) and yeah basically that'd be super helpful!

Deanon because everyone was great about the secret even despite my burning jealousy and apparent raging aquaboner so now I don't feel so jealous any more. ayyy the power of love

I hated that game, from Selena's characterization, to Damian murdering Dick(what) to making it look like killing the Joker would be theworstthingeveromg.

Is this the Injustice game?
dethtoll: (Default)

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-04-29 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. It's basically the only fighting game I've ever really liked.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-04-29 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
*gasp*

Really?! You don't like Tekken, King Of Fighters, Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, Dead Or Alive, or anything? I'm both shocked and saddened by this.
dethtoll: (Default)

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-04-29 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Nope.

Everyone has a genre they don't like. Fighting games is mine.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-04-29 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
That's fair enough -- I apologize if I came across as rude, I didn't mean to imply that you had to like them or anything. I was just surprised that there was nothing about any previously existing fighting game that you liked; whether it was characters, story, music, graphics, or whatever.

No one really expects everyone to know everything about DC comics. If you know the basics and at least attempt to read the comics, then you are pretty much in the clear.

What usually gets DC fans' feathers ruffled is when someone declares that they are "true fans" despite having no desire to read the comics. To which the person who has no desire to read comics usually responds with a "And if you get upset at that, then you are a snob." And then make fun of the people who do read and like the comics. As if they are lessers.

It would be like someone declaring how much they like playing with Star Wars action figures but when you ask them things about the movies they go, "I've never seen them. Don't want to. Those movies are...no, ew. Stop being such a snob."

Even to the most casual fan, this would make absolutely no sense.

So, as long as you are willing to learn, that's all fans care. It's when you start talking down to us for liking what we like, that's when problems start brewing.

Welcome to the fold.

I can attest that it's possible to hoover up a majority of the important stuff in the old continuity and the new one, it's just very time-intensive in that there's a lot to read, especially if you're crazy like me and read all the old stuff from the late 80s up to New 52. Your best bets would be to pick a couple of the A-listers -- Batman and Superman are good choices -- and just follow them through the years. The idea is that you'll start picking up other books they happen to appear in, and the big crossover events are deliberately meant to entice readers of only one or two characters to read other books.

I'm from the other side of the tracks but I promise, the knowledge will come almost as if through osmosis sometimes. Then the next thing you know, you'll be explaining some random event to someone else who's new to the fandom and so the cycle continues.

Nobody--literally nobody--knows everything about DC and it's universes. Anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves.

Get the DC Encyclopedia. I've read most of the comics but it helps you keep track of how the characters and how their storylines interact. There's one for Marvel too. They're awesome.

Very late OP here, I totally got that encyclopedia for Christmas when my dad found out I was into comics. One of these days I'm gonna sit down and read the whole thing back to front I'm so excited. I'm glad someone else thinks it's awesome! Double incentive ayyy!!

[personal profile] rbhudson 2014-05-05 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? Like, it's weird to get excited about an encyclopedia but it's quite an interesting read. My friend is borrowing my Marvel one now.

Hell naw I love encyclopaedias. I used to read through a world encyclopaedia over and over as a kid. Learned absolutely nothing, in one ear and out the other etc., but so absorbing. They're great timekillers!

Very true. I wish I remembered important stuff as well as I remember this comic book trivia, though :p

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
For me, it was the Justice League cartoon show, not this game (which I've never played) but otherwise, I feel about exactly the same. :D
