Put quotation marks around words that are supposed to be read with emphasis. That drives me crazy. Like this: Stay "behind" the yellow line. Or like this: Take a number and "wait to be seated."

Considering that I saw it on a sign at one of the monuments in D.C. (so official government property), it's way too common.

yeah, italics exist for a reason. it's even worse when people are talking to you and they do the quotation marks with their fingers. ugh.

That's a thing? I don't think I've ever seen that. I would find that highly annoying.
