Turn the lights on when there's already plenty of sunlight coming through the windows. I could try to make myself sound really conscious of wasting energy, but that's not even it. It's really weird and I don't know what it is, but the mix of natural and artificial light really annoys me.

I know what you mean. I don't like the combination. Even when I'm doing something for a minute that needs a bit more light, I always hate turning on a light during the day.

On a similar note, people who, on a nice warm day when there's a good breeze, choose to keep the windows shut and turn on the fan. One of my best friends does this for some ineffable reason and I cannot get any kind of actual reason out of her as to why.

I can't speak for your friend, but for me it's usually some combination of

1. Pollen allergies
2. Bugs
3. Noise
4. The breeze is nowhere near cool enough for me

Yeah, noise is the big one for me, too. My bedroom overlooks a well-traveled road, my neighbor runs a home daycare, and everyone in the neighborhood has loud dogs.

Its all about pollen and noise for me. I find noise really distracting. I wear ear plugs both to sleep and when I'm doing homework. And I'd rather not have sneezing fits when I'm working.

1 and 2 for me.

4 applies to me. In summer the way we get by is to try and reserve as much of the cool leftover from the night before, and once that has worn out, keep the hot daytime air out of the house as much as possible.

We don't have air conditioning. It's too expensive.

I always do that, I can't see well enough just by the light coming through my windows...

Totally agree, though for a different reason. I'm happy to sit in my room with the only light being from between the blind slats. I only turn my light on at night, and even then if I don't need to see I'm happy to sit in the dark. Too much light is physically painful for me.

Kind of in the same vein - one thing lots of people do that annoys me is leave lights on when they leave the room for extended periods of time. My roommate and family members both do this. (I also don't turn on the light if there's a lot of natural light, though sadly in my apartment it's rarely bright enough with our window scheme to light up the room all the way.)

My apartmentmate always leaves the bathroom light on. I hate it not only for the environment but because that bright light will wake me all the way up in the middle of the night and then it will be forever until I get back to sleep.

Yes. I know a family who leave the tv on all the time, even at night when everyone's asleep. I just don't get it.

That's even worse. The light thing is (to me, usually it's not when I'm in the same room) a wastefulness issue. TV is not only wasteful but fucking annoying. I really hate having the TV on unless I'm actively watching something in general...

I hate doing it, but I leave various lights on as a safety measure (I live alone in a large house and pretending there's more than one of me and that "we" are always home has seriously cut down on the attempted break-ins - I mean, I'm here to prevent that sort of thing but my employer would rather not have the liability of their caretaker being injured in a home invasion). Trouble is, it's gotten to be such a habit that when I DO have a houseguest, I start running around turning the lights ON after them. It freaks people out :/ Or, I'll go turn on lights in another part of the house, and then hang out downstairs in the twilight which also leaves people with me baffled.

It's stupid, because for my own taste, I'd seriously be OK with just the desklamp and never use the rest of it. Will be very, VERY happy some day when I can afford to live in my own, appropriately sized and not remote, place!

I think it's understandable to leave them on for safety. That's not as much of a waste as leaving them on Just Because. I don't mind my family leaving on the lights that show out of the front of the house, for instance, when we're out, but sometimes they also leave on lights in the back hallway and even in the basement, where they're not benefiting anyone. That's more annoying to me.
