Fanfic recs

Any fandom, any pairing. Just change the title as appropriate. Please remember to warn if there's anything that needs warning for.

question!

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This is for reccing fanfics right? Not a search?

LotR: Halbarad/Serindë (OFC); some smut and medical goriness

[personal profile] ansela_jonla 2014-04-29 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Serinde-verse. A rather long OFC-centric LotR series. After a traumatic mid-foot amputation at the age of nine, Serindë is sent to the Houses of Healing in Minas Tirith to recover. From there she becomes an apprentice healer, eventually rising to Chief Surgeon before her exile by Denethor. She flees north, seeking the northern Rangers, hoping that her friend Thorongil will remember her and find a place for her to ply her trade.

The stories follow Serindë from her childhood through to the War of the Rings and beyond. It's also a rare example of an OFC who doesn't fall in love with Aragorn/Legolas/Boromir/Elrond.

For Game of Thrones fans, Serindë may remind you of a certain show-only character. My headcanon is that she's the basis for Talisa.

Thanks. I'm not usually into OC-centric fics, but this sounds really interesting. I'll have to check it out later this week once I finish my homework.

Power and Paradox here: http://archiveofourown.org/works/1063802

Its Tony/Steve which isn't my favorite pairing. And the author has created a world where everyone is dominant or submissive or switch(sort of like A/B/O but with just the role stuff), which would not usually be my cup of tea. But the author really explores the dynamics and what a world with those sort s of things would be like.

Re: Fanfic recs - Reccing an author

[personal profile] silverr 2014-04-29 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Rather than reccing one fic, I'm going to rec an author: Doyle.

I first came across Doyle several Yuletides ago via their hilarious AbFab story, and have read a number of their other pieces in BtVS, AtS, and Doctor Who. Many of the stories are a delightful blending of spot-on characterization and playfully off-color (though not explicit) humor/situations; I never tire of reccing them.

Avengers, Steve/Tony

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-04-29 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Just gonna cop paste from below.

Not About Superheroes (A Private Little War) http://archiveofourown.org/works/747827/chapters/1394923 In less than a year, Steve has been brought back from the dead, adapted to a whole new world, plunged right back into battle again, and moved in with a bunch of superheroes. He's handling everything remarkably well. Except when he's not.

Mostly centered around Steve hurt/comfort. It is about Steve dealing with internalized homophobia and coming out. To me at least, it is very realistic (meaning no "Day 11: denialdenialdenial Day 12: LET'S HAVE ALL THE GAY SEX)!!!! Steve is also dealing with MAJOR PTSD and depression. Again, fairly realistic.

Perchance to Dream: http://www.fimfiction.net/story/120377/perchance-to-dream

An actress turned housewife goes to an amusement park with her husband's family, then returns home to an unpleasant surprise. Precise and methodical, with strong worldbuilding and stronger characters. It's basically a redemption story, but its approach to redemption is different than you might expect.

Supernatural, old school wincest

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, yeah, I know. It's SPN, aka the mouldering corpse of a show.

If you haven't read Candle Beck (http://archiveofourown.org/users/candle_beck/works?fandom_id=27)'s work though, you're missing out.

She's got a gift at storytelling. And if you were a fan of the first couple of seasons of Supernatural and don't mind wincest, I really recommend you check her out.

Particularly recommend her two AU's:

On the Dodge (http://archiveofourown.org/works/206902) - A Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid AU;

and Look the Other Way (http://archiveofourown.org/works/186105) - where 'Dean is a cop and Sam is his no good brother'.

Captain America: TWS, Steve/Bucky & Kings

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-04-30 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, instead of rec'ing one fic and going into detail about it, I'm just going to rec multiple things...because I've got a lot of Cap fic bookmarked. I've probably rec'd all of these at some point (a couple maybe even more than once), but...maybe someone hasn't seen them? I won't give warnings for individual fics (most of them have their own warnings, I think!) but most of them deal with PTSD, references to torture, etc. If you've seen Winter Soldier, you have a pretty good idea.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1445911

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1439569/chapters/3027844

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1434274/chapters/3015958 (Okay, I will say this is my favorite. Steve takes Bucky to Tony for help after Winter Soldier. Includes all the Avengers; great dynamics and wonderful writing. It's fantastic.)

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1533986 (and the fic it's inspired by, linked in the notes; these are lighthearted 'set up' fics)

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1463533/chapters/3083299

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1524677

Oh, and three Kings fics.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/847323 (This, and it's sequel.)

https://archiveofourown.org/works/1096111 (And this. This is Jack/David, a pairing I wasn't entirely convinced of in the show No matter how pretty it would be, but this fic...this fic makes it work for me, 100%. Beautiful writing.)

seconding the fic where Steve takes Bucky to Tony!

I like that it's really in-character, and it's got a sense of humour as well as being really sad in places. they get the balance right.

'A matter of death and life' by Rheanna on archive of our own. Post-canon, nice organic relationship build, with a canon episode feel and some nice twists.

Captain America: TWS
"One Day We Won't Have to Be Scared"

http://archiveofourown.org/works/922826

Written for this prompt: Steve and Bucky are at a gay bar in the 30s, and some guy offers them money to take pictures of them as they fuck. They need the money, they say yes, and pretty much forget about it afterwards. The pictures come out years later.

Good Omens: Aziraphale/Crowley

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Classic fandom. Something of an odd duck of a fic.

The Sound of Omens (http://archiveofourown.org/works/383720) by Daegaer is a Good Omens and Sound of Music crossover.

Aziraphale is Maria. Crowley is Von Trapp. The fic is cracktastic and very, very silly. Good for a laugh. :)

The Hirac Delest by L'Angel
Fandom: Animorphs
Why I'm reccing: Well, it's an exceptional Tobias-tells-Ax story (a huge missing moment from canon). Angsty, but it gets their characters perfectly.

The Earth Diary of Toby Hamee - by Anijen
Fandom: Animorphs
Why I'm reccing it: I don't care for Toby usually, but this fic made me think about her in a whole new light.

The Sacrifices Arc by Lightning on the Wave
Fandom: Harry Potter
Why I'm reccing it: This just builds on magic and the wizarding world like you wouldn't believe. Twin!Harry and eventual Harry/Draco (a pairing I normally hate), but stick with it.

Author recs: L'Angel (Animorphs), luxken27 (Babysitters Club, icarus_chained (Good Omens, others I don't watch or read).

I'll look up some more and post 'em.

Once Upon a Time: Rumpelstiltskin/Belle

I'm just going to dump my favorite Beauty and the Beast retelling in here. A Bed of Thorns by Nym is, fair warning, longer than Les Miserables and not finished yet.

But it's updated fairly regularly, the author's heading into the home stretch with an ending in mind, and it's one of the best character-focused fics I've ever read. I love Beauty and the Beast adaptations, and this is much more in depth than the one from the show it's based on. So much so that I'd recommend it to people who haven't watched OUAT as a Beauty and the Beast retelling in its own right. It has the (dubious?) distinction of receiving the most comments, kudos, and hits of any het fic (as opposed to slashfic that mentions het couples) on AO3.
