Political Animals

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotta unload. I've read on some random post on tumblr how this show is crappy and Kings is, instead, at least a lot more enjoyable.

Yes, we are talking about shows Sebastian Stan has been in, but this is irrelevant now.

Kings > Political Animals? Really?

My position on this: I've watched Political Animals when it aired, to this day I still think it's one of the best shows out there in terms of character writing, acting and especially in terms of amazing roles for women. I would say it's one of the FEW shows out there that has women in major roles, a story that revolves around women and with extremely good actresses on top of that.

Then I discover it's not even considered enjoyable... and I admit this upset me on a personal level.

Thoughts? Anyone seen it and wants to tell me what I'm doing wrong, or right, or whatever? I can't believe this show has been forgotten so easily... I was hoping it would inspire other shows to do the same.

I thought I'd mention I don't consider myself a social justice warrior at all, so I don't mean to stir up unnecessary drama.

me too, tbh. perhaps they could use some coverage? at least now that sebastian stan has more fans thanks to the mcu movie, people will be interested and check them out.

still op (even previously it was op)

I think they got no converage at all when they aired. From what I recall Kings got a lot more though. People were upset that it wasn't getting a second season. Warning: it does not end evenly, got only 1 season. But I must be honest, I didn't like it at all. Stan's character was probably the only thing that kept me awake.

Political Animals is a miniseries, only 6 hours. It starts a bit slowly I think, but in the middle it picks up spectacularly. I feel like it's one of a kind, for many reasons. The characters that make up the family are gorgeously written.

I'M SO HAPPY.

I'd like to know if you like it or not, somehow. I have no idea how because I'm no telepath though.

I'm a sad anon now. But happy too. Hope you like it!

I meant to watch PA but it didn't happen. I have heard of Kings, but I only vaguely remember it being on. I can't help since I haven't seen them, but I say if you enjoyed the show, who cares what anyone else says?

On that note, I want to watch both shows now.

I can't rec Kings... I'd tell you to stay away from it unless you want to see Sebastian Stan in it or some other actor specifically.

Political Animals on the other hand is fantastic. I can't recommend it enough. It's very short too, 6 episodes and it's out of the way. I'd say try it out when you have time. :)

I watched PA recently, OMFG I loved it so much... I've been gushing about it so much I feel drained.

Well, Sigourney Weaver as the bad ass leading character? PERFECT. But I even have to say that the grandma made the show for me, with her amazing relationship with TJ (Seb Stan's character)... and TJ's brother was also so goood.

I can't say there's a character I did not care for... I have been wondering why it is not more famous actually. I mean, there are such crappy shows around and this one did not get a name for itself? Well, I never heard of it until now, so probably they did not give it a chance upon release. What a shame though... I even got to identify a lot with one character and spent half of the show crying like a loon, LOL.

Also, it needs to me mentioned for people interested in it, that Sebastian Stan is EXTREMELY good (and gay) in it. I *did* start watching because of that, a-hem, and because of Sigourney, stayed for the writing.

(Did not care much for the white house's internal plots and political twists, some were cool some were less interesting, but all in all I'd say it's a very worthy show).

Yes to all of the above, YES.

Sigourney Weaver deserves to be under the spotlight always, she's magnificent. I think this one was a very good role for her, and she has such presence, as always.

TJ is a beautiful, misleaded snowflake and his scenes are all precious and give me heartbreak. I came to know Sebastian Stan in there, and then proceeded to be sad because he didn't land good roles that I knew of right away. I'm happy he got to be where he is now, he deserves it.

The wonderful booze grandma is my heroine. :D And Carla Cugino is awesomtastic too! The scenes by the elephants, bless them forever.

If you're doing something wrong, then so am I because I LOVED that show. It was SO good. Everyone is majorly flawed, and it was just so interesting to see the lives of a political family. Elaine was so cool and badass. I'd vote for her in a heartbeat! I know it's fictional, but it was just nice to see women in politics, particularly one who tried her hardest to actually do her job.

Also, I just liked the dynamics/relationships of everyone. Admittedly, Sebastian Stan was the reason I started watching PA, but I stayed for the story.

I am very sad that it was never picked up for another season. :(

For real. As for me, I still can't believe a character like her didn't become iconic the moment she landed on tv.

I am very sad that it was never picked up for another season. :(
I'm curious, did it have another season? The ending of course was a bit sad because it was like a beginning unfairly cut off, but I felt it left me quite content. They managed to wrap it up in a lovely way.

I also started watching because of Seb Stan, but couldn't stop watching because of all the other reasons.

AYRT It was written as a mini-series but had potential to get more seasons. USA decided it would stay as a mini-series.

I'm glad the series was sort of wrapped up, but I wanted more. I wanted to actually see Elaine run, and beat Collier's ass!

I'm not alone!

No but really, I wonder what happened to make it pass under the radar so much. It had good actors, good writers, it was well directed and had good photography.

It had all the cards to be a winner, and it didn't. I wonder about these shows, there's such crap on tv, and then there are such slow and pretentious, if beautiful, shows like True Detective... and this one couldn't make it? They probably didn't push it enough, no other reason to fail so much.

And another part of me thinks a reason is the lack of lead make characters. And that doesn't make me very happy.

AYRT

I totally believe it was because both leads were female. It's such a shame because they were both awesome, and they're dynamic was interesting to watch.

I think another reason was that this show got NO press from USA. Jerks. First they don't advertise for this show and then they decide not to pick up Happy Endings. :(

I loved Political Animals! I'd read that if the ratings were high enough they would've continued so I was sad it didn't happen. :(

I thought they were both great shows in their own ways. I like the universe Kings was set in more because it was a bit more ~fantastical~, but Political Animals had an unbeatable cast and was extremely well written and well-rounded. It was an incredibly solid show, and yes, had some wonderful actresses in it. (Kings did too imo, but...that show didn't focus on the female cast as much. Rose was one of the fiercest people in the whole show.)

I've never heard a lot of hate for Political Animals, so this is news to me, but I don't see what's not to like about it.

Are you sure this isn't an extremely unpopular opinion? I've never heard anyone say that PA was bad.

Not even Sebastian Stan could make me watch more than three or four episodes of Kings, whereas I recced PA to basically everyone the minute I finished it.
