Most of the reactions I've seen from people with some actual stakes in this whole thing point out the reactions you mentioned, but it doesn't seem like it's a total non-issue:

They do also go back to the Harujuku Girls thing, since I've seen that referenced:

thisisnotjapan is a horrible asshole who should not be allowed on the internet.

Are they? I found it when I googled for info again just now. I just linked these since they're at least the actual POC in question.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-04-29 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I lost all respect for them after they went off on two white girls in yukatas, even after it was pointed out that one of the girls was wearing a yukata that she got as a gift from her host family in Japan, and the other girl was wearing a yukata IN JAPAN FOR A JAPANESE FESTIVAL.

I will look for the links for you, if you'd like, but admittedly it was a while ago, and on tumblr, so I completely understand if you don't believe me.

Nah, don't worry about it. I refreshed the page and went back a bit and I see where they could really go overboard. These links are just similar to the ones I saw on my dash, so they were a lot better than digging forever.

I admit to liking the first post where they talked with their kids, though. I'm a POC myself and those types of conversation were comforting to me as a kid.

They have kids? Poor kids.

If it's the first link, it's their students, which means they are waaay older than I assumed. Unless they're getting their hours as a student teacher or something.

Are you not supposed to wear yukata/kimono if you're not Japanese or in Japan? Why? There's a website that sells them from Japan and proudly has pictures of non-Japanese, non-Asian people wearing them in their own countries.

Pictures and links to more are at the bottom of the page:

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
No, there is nothing offensive about wearing a yukata. It's just clothing in Japan, nothing sacred or special.

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's not offensive, but you will very likely look like a tool. (At least in the US.)

Re: AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
One of the girls with Yukatas made the mistake of posting that photo with The Vapors's "I'm turning Japanese" lyrics, so TINJ took it like "omg so racist!".

I remember an Aikidoka asked for some translation on the kanjis in his belt and that blog attacked him with "it says 'I'm a ching chong white weaboo" (or something like that), and I contacted that guy telling them they should ignore that blog and the real meaning of his belt. It turned out the belt was a gift from his Japanese sensei.

They SAY they are POCs. They can be anything to tell the truth.

True, but I'm too lazy to dig for further interne crazy when I only needed variants of what I saw.

Stop excusing your lazyness

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2014-04-30 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
You posted one person, a known assholish person's, multiple thoughts on the same thing.

You want to talk like you got some validity, find more then one person. Do some goddamn homework or stop talking like an authority.

Especially when your one source is such a shit one.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think I have validity or authority? I said that I'm a minority but not Japanese. But these were exactly the kinds of arguments I saw reblogged on my dash when it happened. I just pasted one source's reaction because it was the easiest to grab by googling key terms. When someone said it was an asshole blog, I checked further back and agreed with them, because it's true.

I'm sorry I ended up picking such a shit source when all I needed was the actual argument, though. It just looked like people it could have actually mattered to vs. the usual SJW Tumblr, which is why I decided to comment with it instead of reading like I normally do.

Unless you wanted a more honest answer. TBH, I did check the mod pages right before and double-checked after I posted the links to make sure they were at least somewhat relevant to the whole thing. I said I was lazy because I really don't want to start doubting people who say they're POC on the internet vs. the "trans-ethnic"/other SJW crap, which is what the comment was saying. I get why people would somehow think it would be worth lying about online, but it's just not the rabbit hole I want to go down, you know? I'll be dubious about everything else I read on Tumblr, but I get a lot of shit for my looks IRL, so race is my line in the sand.

(Insert unfunny "I want to believe" meme because it popped into my head and won't go away.)

This comment is gonna look fucking long, so sorry for that. I almost never disagree with you whenever you post so I figured I would be straight about it, anon or not.

You keep saying "but I saw this"

Look, just, if your gonna do it, do it right, you know? Even if it was a valid source, using only one when you are talking about a lot of people still looks iffy. Do you have to prove anything to us about numbers of stuff you saw? Not really. But you were trying to so do a decent job of it if so, that's all.

I do know you were trying to say something here, sorry it all got caught up in how much thisisnotjapan sucks instead.

Just logging because my internet died and I'm not gonna bother messing with my phone browser.

Anyhoo, it's cool. I get what you mean. I actually can't recover the dash reblogs because my friends never tag and go to post limit every day, which is why I had to search and went with one (now proven shitty) source. Most of those reblogs were also just SJWs complaining. But there were a few posts that read a LOT like the ones I found among all the rest, and it nagged me enough that I decided to risk all the links instead of just one. I know one source spamming looks pretty batshit normally, so I'm glad I just came out like a minor dumbass instead.

I am kind of bummed the blog sent the thread off-kilter, but that was my own damn fault. Should've checked the archives more. I could also be immune to terrible by now, to be fair. A lot of my IRL friends and relatives are like the blog.

Yeah, I saw when I checked the mod page after skimming other stuff. There are other mods, but the tags vary.

Thisisnotjapan is a disgrace of a site even for tumblr.

I'm laughing pretty hard at the "trans-ethnic" one below, to be honest. This one seemed more standard Tumblr to me.

All your links are from an asshole that there's no actual point in listening to. Stakes or no.
