You can get more for £1 than you can for $1.

I really hope this is true and not just your experience, because it would make me feel a whole lot better. I guess I assumed that things were more expensive in countries where the money is worth more...although thinking about it, that's patently illogical, isn't it? I really need to learn more about economics.

Either way, if your friend just plan out his grocery shopping (or whatever else he needs money for) it can stretch out quite a bit. And if I remember correctly you can get like wraps and such from Costco for somewhere between £1-2 so you will definitely get him enough for lunch!
