When I was living in Japan we had a girl from CA who was a Cali girl, she described herself as such, and was third gen. The Japanese cooks in our dorm would call her by her surname and expect more from her even though she grew up in America, they saw her as Japanese. It's a bit of the opposite of what you're saying and I thought it was funny.
