Anime recs?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't really been watching much anime over the past few years, and I'm dipping my toes back in again. Yay!

Unfortunately, everything I've tried seems to be either fetishising children, blatantly porny/fanserviceish, incestish, or all of the above. Not so yay.

Any recs for decent newish (let's say going up to 3-4 years back) anime that doesn't do all that? I've liked Hozuki no Reitetsu so far, and I'm trying out Log Horizon now; liked the first episode, hope the rest is good!

This request brought to you by my watching the first eps of No Game No Life, Mondaiji-tachi, and Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei and going "oh god why."

I watched an anime that looked harmless and fun about girls fighting monsters with tarot cards. Ends with a twelve year old girl almost getting raped/attempted PREGNANCY by the villain, and the other twelve/thirteen year old girls getting skewered, burned, murdered and then brought back to life.

God Japan, why is this so popular now?

AYRT

Oh god, what is that anime I need to know so I never give it a shot D:

Day Break Illusion is what it's called

Thank you so much. Anti-recs are ridiculously necessary with anime. Stupid misleading promos!

From the New World
Humanity has Declined
Kyousogiga
Kids on the Slope
Princess Jellyfish
Chihayafuru
Mawaru Penguindrum
Hyouka
Bunny Drop
Tiger and Bunny

Also One Week Friends airing right is pretty cute and has no fanservice.

Thank you! I've tried Chihayafuru and Tiger and Bunny, but neither really appealed, unfortunately. Everything else is new to me, though, so I'll be trying them out soon~

I tried making the recs fairly varied, so hopefully you'll find something you do like!

Also forgot to mention the viewing order of Kyousogiga can get a bit screwy if you don't know what you're doing, even though it's only 11 episodes. Make sure you're watching the 2013 TV series instead of the ONAs. You'll be able tell because the ONAs are less than 20 minutes (and you're not missing anything; they're included in the TV series.)

If you watch it on Crunchyroll, you shouldn't have any problems. Just start with episode 0 and trust me when I say that the plot will eventually make sense.

I was going to second Tiger & Bunny as well. I don't know how many eps you watched, but I wasn't totally sold until the 5th one. Just fyi.

I adore Kids on the Slope, although I think the manga was a bit better. The anime follows the manga very closely for most of it, but there was too much material so the last one or two episodes, while quite good, don't give you the depth that the manga does.

Mawaru Penguindrum is very cool and I enjoyed it, but it really helps if you have someone to watch it with because you will probably have lots of questions.

Let me also rec Ping Pong which is showing now. Three episodes have aired, the fourth is due tomorrow. I'm riveted.

Doesn't Bunny Drop end with pseudo-incest though?

Re: Anime recs?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Only the manga. After the timeskip. I pretend it doesn't exist.

Ah, okay. I just remember that I was going to check it out because the premise looked really cute but then some of my friends told me not to because of how it ended.

In Samurai Flamenco almost all of the characters are adults, but it is very much an anime about anime.

I keep hearing people talk about this; I'll give it a shot, thanks! =D

My number one pick is more than 3-4 years old (but is still free on Crunchyroll) is Gankutsuou: the Count of Monte Cristo. This one does start out a little slow (and the visual style does take some getting used to) but it's entirely fabulous.

I also really like Saint Seiya: Lost Canvas and for sheer crunchy crackness, JoJo's Bizarre Adventures (Season 2 is underway: it and Season 1 are on Crunchyroll.

Ooh, I remember really liking Gankutsuou - but I don't think I ever finished it, so thanks for reminding me! I'll give the others a shot as well; thanks for the recs!

Yeah, GKO really builds and builds and builds. (I dare not ask how far you got, so as not to spoil you.) As I recall the sub is on CR (the dub's not bad, though, as dubs go).

If you do wind up watching it all PM me if you'd like someone to squee with: I love it to pieces and am happy to talk about it any time.

Do you have a specific genre/type you prefer, anon?

Re: Anime recs?

I'm pretty open to trying anything, though I have a soft spot for things with magic and/or games (hence why I tried No Game No Life and Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei in the first place).

I guess I'm fairly disinterested in romance as the driving plot, though even with that, I'm willing to give it a try if it's good!

DA

Oooh if you like magic, you might be interested in Chaika the Coffin Princess airing this season. Its setting is incredibly fantasy genre and has lots of magic because of it. So far, it's been surprisingly competent with its characters and hasn't fallen into the over-explaining things to the audience trap that a ton of anime are guilty of.

We're on the same boat, OP.

Mononoke (anime) If you like horror, mystery and weird looking animation, then this is for you! If you don't, then this is for you!

Mushishi - More pretty animation. So much green.

Free! Iwatobi Swim Club - boy does the main character love water. And who wouldn't, when it's so beautifully animated.

.......My list fell short. I'm sorry, OP! I have failed you.

Re: Anime recs?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
I love Mushishi~ =D Free! didn't quite do it for me, I know not why, but I shall try out Mononoke! Uh, when you say horror, though, how scary is it? I have a tendency to freak myself out, so I need to be prepared .____.

Mushishi is great! :D And apparently it has a second season! I can understand about Free! Don't fret. ;P We where in the middle of some bloodier and gorier stuff *stares at snk*, so it was a nice change of pace from it.

Mmmhh it's mostly supernatural horror. I wouldn't say it's Junji Ito's levels of horror, tho; people don't turn into curly noodles nor do they feel strangely attracted to mountain holes. Give the first 3 chapters/Bakeneko arc a try and see how well you take it? Think of it as murder-mystery kinda stuff.

Seconding all three of these. Especially Mononoke, which is brilliant.

Yusss. I don't usually insist on stuff, but this one I'd rec even to non-anime watchers because it's really good.
