I actually think they handled the dead bodies aspect of it with a lot more weight and respect than a lot of procedurals these days.

The bit with the girls on stag heads was an exception to the rule, and I think in that case, it was intended to reveal a lot about the killer's character. The viewer sees the psychological impact that the murders are having on Will over the course of Season 1.

I also think they use the contrast - the beautiful imagery, with the reality that 'this is people!' - as a way of creating cognitive dissonance in the viewer. "Wow that meal is really appetizing... oh wait."
It becomes very unsettling, and it's part of the reason I like the show.
