I can see what you are feeling. But I think this is something that happens everywhere. When some people have a favorite character, it is very difficult for them to see any of the defects of character. It is not right for them to feel this way, but it happens so often that seems to be normal. Humans are humans.

See, I don't get that attitude at all. I love characters BECAUSE of their flaws - that's what makes them interesting to me. Characters that are perfect and never do anything wrong are boring as hell. Where's the conflict?

I agree with you. I like when characters are well-rounded than when they are perfect. But I've seen a lot of people that ... Hmm, I'm trying to think of a way to say this. It is as if the flaws make them uncomfortable, so if they love a character, they have to do away with all the flaws.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
But then if they do that, what they love isn't really the character itself. They like the image and idea of the character, but they don't actually like the character. They're only interested in what they WANT the character to be but isn't.

And now you understand fandom. This little piece of insight you've just unloaded is EXACTLY why you see people becoming absolutely insane about their favorite characters and their headcanons and their ships, because they project so very hard onto those characters and headcanons and ships that they begin to view them as an extension of their own personal selves.

Yes, this is true. But they do not know it.

I do not defend them. I think they are looking at things the wrong way. However, I would like to try to understand them. I think there's something of value there, even though I think they are wrong.

Man I LOVE Lagertha, but she's got her flaws. Everyone on that show does. TBQH though, I don't like Aslaug. And maybe it's because I'm constantly comparing her to Lagertha and her relationship to Ragnar with Lagertha's relationship to Ragnar, but man, I can't stand her. I really hope he gets that third wife so that she will hopefully go.

Are you talking about the Lagertha fans who hate Aslaug's guts? I feel like people are coming round to liking her more, actually. Especially seeing as she and Lagertha are actually getting along.

This is me and whatever female character is considered the most "badass" in each fandom I'm in.

Lagertha is pretty awesome, but I do agree that she's flawed (naturally).

As for people going apeshit about how much more awesome she is than the other characters (mind you, I wasn't fond of Aslaug), they should calm down. That's why I really appreciate the fact that the show portrays the kind of relationship that Aslaug and Lagertha have---they're not bffs, but they certainly aren't mortal enemies. They have a mutual respect, and I feel that (esp. if you saw last week's episode) both characters recognize what's great about the other (i.e. Lagertha saw Aslaug's wit and beauty, she didn't fight her over Ragnar, she moved on; Aslaug understands that Lagertha's strength as a woman and in battle make her a role model to the local girls). Women should stand together, not rip each other apart over who's better, who gets the guy, etc. etc. etc.

I feel the same way. I love Lagertha. But the way some fans hate Aslaug because she is not Lagertha is a huge turn off. Can't I like them both for different reasons?

Sometimes it's best to just ignore the fans? I don't know. I had to stop watching that show because my SO got another woman pregnant behind my back on 'accident', so the story just makes me angry. To each their own though.

Vikings is my main fandom, so I can't really ignore the other fans, unfortunately

I'm not in this fandom, but I actually feel this way about a lot of female characters I generally like. And then a certain kind of tumblr fandom comes along with all that "omfg she is the QUEEN all other characters don't even compare to her she's flawless everyone else sucks and doesn't deserve her" bullshit and suddenly I'm just annoyed by that character. :/

Aww man, now I want to see this. I love her hair. I'll have to check this out, thanks OP.
