There are lots of movies about terrible things that actually happened.

Either denounce all historical fiction, or recognize that the only reason you care is because it effects you personally. And that means that you, if you were in the creators' shoes, would be perfectly cool with making a film about someone else's tragedy.

There are different ways of writing historical fiction though.

You can use a fictional character to portray real events and their impact. But this movie distorts historical facts themselves.

Which... storytellers and authors have been doing since time in memoriam?

Immemorial.

I mean, in the sense that it's about actual straight up magic and Rasputin being an undead wizard, for sure. But it truly doesn't focus on the actual historical context of the revolution and Soviet Russia, at least to my recollection, so I'm not sure how much you can say it's totally distorting history, beyond just ignoring it...

There's a difference between "movie" and "wacky animated musical", and you know it. You're pretending not to know it, and conflating the subcategory with the general category, as a rhetorical trick.

"Schindler's List" =/= "Springtime For Hitler".

Expect it wasn't that wacky? It was really damn dark in a lot of places.
