inb4 "it isn't Disney"

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yepp I screwed up. Sorry. Though to be fair, this particular work IS a lot like Disney's usual stuff.

Anastasia is not Disney.

Nothing else to add, sorry.

Misidentification aside, I'm very much inclined to agree. I found Disney's Pocahontas creepy as fuck for the same reason. Seriously, just don't do fanciful cartoon musicals about real people who died under depressing circumstances, okay?

I realize that this is an issue that is close to you personally, and so it bothers you. But the media doesn't care about your pain, or anyone else's pain. They care about money. And they will exploit anything for the 'story' as long as its suitably dramatic. Anastasia is part of a long list.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It isn't meant to be a historical movie. It is just taking an interesting conspiracy theory (that Anastasia lived) and basically making a headcanon out of that. The actual revolution isn't even in the forefront of the movie (communism is never mentioned though it IS hinter at).

There are lots of movies about terrible things that actually happened.

Either denounce all historical fiction, or recognize that the only reason you care is because it effects you personally. And that means that you, if you were in the creators' shoes, would be perfectly cool with making a film about someone else's tragedy.

That's kind of how history works, I guess. Things get more distant and we feel less strongly about their tragic aspect. Our emotional response to it fades away. I don't think that's bad or inappropriate - it would be kind of impossible to feel the full emotional weight of everything all the time.

But maybe I'm just saying that because I always liked that movie.

I understand why it bothers people. I like both Anastasia, and Disney's Pocahontas, but it is very see why people are offended by them. I just really don't think there is much anyone can do about it, or other movies like them.
I think the people who made them were able to get away with it because Anastasia, and Pocahontas weren't based on the actual historical people, but the legends that grew around them. For years there were rumors that Anastasia survived the murder of her family, and I'm pretty sure there is a lot of debate about whether Pocahontas and John Smith ever actually met before she married John Rolf.

Yeah, it always sketchy when tragic history is made into light entertainment. Well, sketchy unless you know what you are really, really doing. (See most WWII movies like The Great Escape or The Inglorious Basterds)

IDGI. What exactly do you think children's fiction is for? Mindless fluff that has nothing to do with and will never teach kids anything -- even if that teaching is softened and partial -- about history?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I agree with the general sentiment, but it's really difficult to say how soon is "too soon" to make movies about things. Because there will always be movies about/based on historical events. You could also say that using the Titanic tragedy as the setting for a cheezy romance flick was in poor taste.

It never sat well with me that the movie made Rasputin, an actual historical figure, into a Satan-like demon trying to destroy Anastacia from beyond the grave. Never really had a problem with the rest of it though, because it was so clearly a confection. Plus, I would wager that it probably led lots of young kids to be interested in Russia and Russian history, and to find out the real story behind it all, so I can't be mad about that.

It also has my favourite song in any animated musical:

(Once Upon A December of course, gorgeous.)

I feel you, OP. I don't necessarily even object to fantasy-history hybrids in principle. But I couldn't hang with Anastasia, maybe because when I saw it, I knew just enough about the actual Romanovs and the actual Russian revolutionary period to make me unable to enjoy Evil Sorcerer Rasputin and his Evil Sorcerer Plot. Plus that aspect of things didn't really add anything to Anastasia's story, so its presence in the movie was really jarring.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Much as I loved this film as a kid... now that I'm an adult, yeah. I agree.

It's really fucking bizarre that they decided to make a ~magical princess~ film out of real life events that had happened not too long ago.

Now whenever I think of this film, it reminds me of the Nostalgia Critic's review of the animated Titanic movies...

Like others said, I wonder if you feel this about other historical fiction as well, OP? Though as you knew people who lived through this time I guess it must be a lot closer to your heart.

But as it is, Anastasia is really just alternate history that use conspiracy theories (Anastasia survived) and how many Romanov impostors there has been (Wikipedia* lists 17, with 5 Anastasias) as it's basis. And, in my opinion, it also seems like the people behind the film has treated the culture and the story with a fair amount of respect, like how they allude to how the conditions were in Russia at the time and doesn't really romanticize it, and with the exception of Rasputin (I won't comment anything about the historical Rasputin here) every "real" person comes out of it in a good light.
