Gotta be honest...

I don't see how this movie is offensive unless you're friends with the royal family, or family of Rasputin who might be mad that his name was dragged through the mud (well, more).

It's not even about the revolution. That doesn't feature at all. It's a very personal story about Anastasia. Just the fact that it is set during that time period offends you, really?

I'll agree that it was a poor idea for a movie. The royal family were all pretty horrifically assassinated, including Anastasia herself. And whereas there was some conspiracy that Anastasia survived, it was pretty much proven false. A tragedy for the family, and there were real women trying to take advantage of that by claiming to be Anastasia.

That being said, it is an amazing movie. If you can swallow the historical inaccuracies and disrespect to the family and real people involved, it is still a fantastic film. Beautiful story, beautiful music, awesome characters, and that hilarious bat creature thing.

I would assume they were friends with White Russians, or members of a minority group or the middle class, who were forced to flee the country. That's the assumption I've been operating on anyway.

Which is... the course of an event like the Russian Revolution is incredibly complex and I think it is a danger for us in the West that we frequently only get one side of a lot of stories like this and make our judgments based on that.

But I'd argue that the film has nothing to do with that. It is about Anya and that's it. In the background of the film, maybe there's a little of that going on, but from what I remember the movie is pretty much not about the revolution at all, or any after effects of it. It is about a lost princess on a journey to find her family. It isn't about happy bubbly post-Revolution Russia, and is absolutely not about communism.
