Misidentification aside, I'm very much inclined to agree. I found Disney's Pocahontas creepy as fuck for the same reason. Seriously, just don't do fanciful cartoon musicals about real people who died under depressing circumstances, okay?

IA. Singing and animal sidekicks aside, Pocahontas' story had a really depressing end. Most people who watch the movie and pat themselves on the back for learning about Native American history have no clue.

People do that? Think they've actually learned about Native American history? Because you're not going to learn ANY history from a Disney movie...

Oh yeah... in a little who to delete game on a Disney community there were a few people screaming their heads off that people wanted to delete Pocahontas because she was a real person, and we should respect the Disney movie and character that teach real history, and how everyone who wanted to vote Pocahontas off was a screaming racist.

Pocahontas is the one disney movie my daughter isnt allowed to watch.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't it be better to show it to her and then tell her why it's bad?

I'm not sure outright banning is useful, tbh. Your daughter learns nothing from it, not even why you don't want her to watch the movie... which is going to turn the movie into forbidden fruit purely because you're set on not letting her see it. Maybe consider trying to find some age-appropriate stories about the real Pocahontas and her people, then watching the movie together and talking about the differences?

I think that would depend on the age of the kid - there were quite a lot of movies my parents didn't let me watch at various ages because people of my ethnicity were the villains. When I had a better understanding (age about 10 and up), they watched them with me. The commenter's child might be much younger than that.

AYRT: We'll do that when she's older. At this point she hasn't expressed an interest in it so it's not a big deal in our house, I just hate it. And my husband hates watching anything historical with me anyway because I spend the whole movie picking it apart and he wants to enjoy it.

I can't really watch Pocahontas because of that, too. My mom really disliked it and and made every effort to point out the historical ignorance (and she always mentioned John Rolfe, too) in the story every time the movie was brought up or we somehow caught it on TV.

Somehow, I'm thankful for her for that one, since it made me a lot more critical of movies based on historical figures.

Aww, I really loved Pocahontas as a kid. :-/ I still think it has some of the best music of any Disney movie. But even back then, I looked up information about the real historical figures and knew that the stuff in the movie wasn't accurate.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
My dad hated the movie for the historical inaccuracies - but all I really understood was that he didn't like it and each time I saw it, I felt guilty for enjoying something inaccurate. (I am an extremely easy person to guilt trip, I could have been absent on a day we had a substitute teacher but would still feel guilty if my classmates misbehaved, so this wasn't a unique situation.)

I've appreciated his historical criticisms more as I grew older, but at the time my logic was Dad doesn't like the movie = this movie is bad = I shouldn't watch/like this movie.
