What kind of fandom are you in? I've never been in a fandom where people showed obvious preference for fanart over fanfic, not even when I was in anime fandoms during my tweens.

People post on f!s all the time about how fic is terrible, ESPECIALLY slash fic.

Ahh but that's a preference between types of fic! Usually they're bitching because they can't find enough het, femmeslash or gen fic in slash-crowded fandoms.

I'm wondering what fandoms they're in because it's a lot easier to find good fanart than fanfic for all of my current fandoms. If I go to Pixiv, I'll get pages and pages of art, most of which is really nice. Looking on AO3 or FFnet gets me less than 200 fics per fandom and a lot of them aren't good at all.

I think anime fandoms tend to have better quality fanart than fanfic in general.

That may be true. I'm not into any LA fandoms (just anime, manga, comics and video games) so I can't say what those are like, but I've consistently been able to find much better fanart than fic in all of my fandoms.

The fic side is actually terribly disappointing.

Maybe it's just that fanart gets more feedback than fanfic?

In my fandom, fanart regularly gets more comments than fanfic... even when the fanart is barely on the level of stick figures.

My guess (and I could be very wrong) is that people are more at ease leaving leave feedback for art because they don't feel any pressure to say something particularly thoughtful or articulate.
