maybe they like shitty fanart better than good fic because they have the attention spam of a four-year-old on a sugar high

People like that seem to do just fine with fanfic though. It used to be a cliche for certain fics to begin with a note going "lol I wrote this at 2am while high on pixie stix"

What kind of fandom are you in? I've never been in a fandom where people showed obvious preference for fanart over fanfic, not even when I was in anime fandoms during my tweens.

Don't worry, f!s loves fic.

I'm sure there's good fic out there, but shipping, AUs, and most gen doesn't appeal me so fanart leaves me more options.

Fanart demands less of a time investment from the viewer, and I have noticed that the standards by which fanart is judged are completely different than fic. Cutesy little jokes that in fic would be lambasted as horribly OOC get lauded in fanart all the time.

It's okay for people to have a personal preference, but I'd side-eye anybody who says that fanart as a rule is better quality than fanfic.

Sounds like you're referring to Tumblr. You pretty much mentioned the reason why this happens: fanart is easier to appreciate because if you're the average Tumblr user, you can look at it for one second while scrolling and hit like/reblog, end of story.

But with fanfiction they actually have to stop and READ something, which takes some effort and requires more than one second to complete. This is clearly asking way too much of most tumblr users.

Wat
Where are people saying these things?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people - in all areas of life, not just fandom - are stupid. You learn to avoid them rather than engage.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-30 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Fanart rarely does anything for me, but a beautifully crafted sentence can ruin me for days. Some people are different, those people probably put less effort into finding fic than me. Not a shocker.

I've never come across this in fandom, only outside of fandom where they're both treated with a fair amount of disdain(though fic does tend to get a harsher judgement).

I like both but not everyone is the same.

I have never in my life heard of fanart being considered more legit than fanfic. If anything, I've always heard the exact opposite.

This reminds me that the Nick!TMNT fandom is the first one I'd been involved with that actually had a high fic-to-art ratio in terms of fandom output. (Mass Effect too, I guess, but I'd separated myself from that a couple years ago, so idek what the fic-to-art ratio is like there now)

tbh, fan fic doesn't really do it for me. I still have flashbacks of the "pixie stick" high and sensless women bashing fics from years ago in ancient fandoms of mine, not to mention I don't want to subconciously steal something from someone's fic for my own non-fandom stuff. Different strokes and all that, I guess?

I know that feel.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
They like fanart because you can look at it for two seconds and move on. Fandom these days is far more visual--what with all the gifs, videos, etc. The Tumblr generation can't be bothered to read more than a paragraph if it isn't about ~*~social justice~*~ or some white dude's secret gay affair with his bff/enemy/whatever.

Really? I've never seen anyone say this, at least not anyone who's in fandom. (I have seen "outsiders"/non-fandom people deride fic while lauding fanart, though.) The prevailing attitude seems the opposite. What kind of fandom circles do you run in?

Oh no, fans who claimed fanart is dumb and fic is the only worthwhile thing for decades now have to compete with the growing population of fans who feel the opposite, whatever shall we do.

I think part of it comes from the fact that everyone can write (writing well, on the other hand...) and do so often in daily life, but most people don't draw. So art beyond stick figures is like this great mystery to be admired without analysis, but writing gets the 'I could do that/do better!' reaction.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm more of a visual person now, so I enjoy fanart/manga/doujinshi more than fanfic.

It's not that I don't like fanfic, it's just that not a lot of it suits my personal taste.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Please tell me where those people live because I'm a bit tired of 'waaah but I just don't like art I'm just not a visual person and art doesn't have a narrative anyway?'. Obviously staying in the wrong corners of fandom there.
