Percy?

Is it Percy Weasley? He's not beloved, wears glasses, and I always headcanon that he's got some sort of mental health thing going on.

that...is the best guess I've seen so far, OP.

Actually, it makes a lot of sense. Didn't he wear "horn-rimmed glasses", which would be tortoiseshell? And he fits the rest of the secret.

Yeah, this was my guess too. I kind of hope it's right, because I love him.

...why? I mean, I get finding him an interesting character or extremely endearing in the final battle, but what exactly is there in the books that could make someone "love" him?

I really felt for him in the first couple books because he was a rules-abiding kid trying to be a responsible older brother to Fred and George, who were really pretty awful.

I was speaking pretty offhand so I guess "love" isn't the word I'd use if I were speaking exactly. He's supposed to be dislikeable, but honestly he always came off as harried while at Hogwarts, if a bit uppity. I don't know, I'm pretty cowardly and stubborn myself and never cared much for the perfection that is supposed to be the Weasley family, and I could kind of get his motives for doing what he did. Then again my favourite of the Golden Trio is Ron, so obviously I just like people who can be jerks and a mite self-centered.
But yeah, Percy's in my top five of favourites. I guess I do love him.

ayrt, btw.

NAYRT

I love him because he's a nerd who had the balls to stand in opposition to his enormous, tight-knit family when they were advocating courses of actions that - to him - sounded very wrong.

Yeah, he was one of my three favorite characters in the series too. I didn't always like what he did, and he could be a bit of a dick, but I always got the feeling that he was being incredibly Gryffindor - he was doing what he thought was "right" for both himself and his family and could be just as mulish about it as anyone. I never understood the deep hate-on some fans seemed to have over him.

I wouldn't say he's universally hated, though; I saw a decent amount of fanfic starring him back when I was in HP fandom.

And my first thought was also an HP character: Rita Skeeter.

That was my thought too, based on the glasses.

This seems like a very good guess.

OP: It's Percy.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
The universal hatred I mostly got from individual conversations with people and general lack of fannish gushing (I do remember shipping fic about him and Wood I think?), and I thought his canon portrayal was very unsympathetic.

I've never had the impression that people hated Percy. I agree that in-universe the rest of the Weasleys were really shitty to him, but it never seemed like fandom hated him. When I was more into HP I recall reading a decent amount of Percy fic, considering he was such a background character (and yes, the Oliver Wood/Percy fic was amazing), though, yeah, it did take some looking to find it. I always felt bad for him and thought there was something interesting going on with the character. And he does get his redemption moment at the end of the series.
