I've taught myself not to wallow in depression and self-pity. If something is upsetting me then I find something I can do to fix it, even if it's just one small step in the right direction.

That's awesome. I linger on my way out of the pity party. How do you do it? Or is it just you?

I feel like I failed so hard before that I'm just desperate to avoid doing that again. I've made a lot of mistakes that come down to me refusing to do anything about a problem. Then when I did finally face the problem it turned out that the solution wasn't as bad as guiltily avoiding everything (or it wouldn't have been if I had faced it in time), once I got past the inertia at least.

So now I try not to give myself too much time to think about the unpleasant aspects of what I have to do. I always have a back-up plan ready in case my current plan falls through so I can immediately start working on something new without having to think too much. If I do start worrying about it then I try to redirect my thoughts to how well things turned out in the past when I finally stopped wallowing and did something.

The small steps add up. I find exercise to be really good when I need to get my mind off of things.
