As someone who frequently ships non-canon, and finds the non-canon status of their pairing a liberating thing*, I agree with you.

* I think non-canon allows far more possibilities for interpretation for a pairing, while being canon locks one into the canon depiction of a pairing.


Pointless additional comment: I ship two people who never meet, and at best the younger own may have heard the older one's cousin mention him as someone who died on a quest the cousin's father went on. The only thing more non-canon than that is that I also ship the older one's OC nephew/son with a stone.
