I can't figure out if you disagree that he's a coward, or agree that he is, since depending on what part of the OUAT fandom you talk to, you'll get a different answer...

I think he is about some things, mainly to do with giving up his power, or telling the whole truth, rather than presenting bits of it in ways that benefit him. But cowardly as in afraid to fight? Not so much, especially prior to becoming the Dark One. He wasn't afraid to fight, so much as afraid of leaving his kid with no father, so much so that he panicked. I know the show won't ever go into depth about this, but I wonder why he didn't simply desert instead of laming himself. Was the punishment for desertion death? It looks like the punishment for laming himself was making him walk home on his broken ankle, anyway, and if he knew that beforehand, that takes some bravery right there.

And if that wasn't proof, sneaking into the Duke's castle after setting it on fire to steal the dagger was brave bordering on stupidly suicidal.

He is an incredible coward. His cowardice is just entirely emotional, rather than something that turns up in the face of physical threat. He's the sort of character who would typically dive head-first into a dragon's mouth if the only other option was to allow himself to be truly emotionally vulnerable.
