Beauty fades, OP. That is one of the constants in the world, even though there are whole industries based on trying to trick us that we can turn back - or at least pause - time.

But your intelligence, your wit, your humour, your kindness, your warmth, the sound of your laughter, that awesome twinkle in your eye - those things stick with you for life, once you start nurturing them. And they're always attractive to other people.

Those are the things that will make you beautiful forever, OP. Be kind to yourself. You're great.

Just being kind and good-humoured to the people around you will give you most of those. Which is kind of the point. Work on the aspects of yourself that you actually can change instead of giving up because you can never be a photoshopped fantasy.

But let's be honest, anon. If you're ugly (not just average or not special, but actually ugly), very few will care about your wit, your humour and whatever you mentioned. They see that you're ugly and very, very few will think you're attractive or even want to voluntariyl spent time with you.

And it's even crueler in the dating world. I'm honest and shallow enough to admit that no matter great someone's personality might be, if I find them ugly I don't want to date them. I need to find person attractive to want to date and have sex with them.

Completely disagree. Good people will like you if you're good people. Assuming that the OP is 'actually ugly' (however you define that) and consequently a societal leper is not a particularly convincing counterargument.

Re: your second anecdotal point, it's true that I also need to be attracted to someone to want to date them, but for one, my idea of physically attractive differs from media standards and also most of my friends. For two, feeling emotionally connected with someone trumps initial physical attraction for me, and will often trigger it when it was absent before.

I'm actually kind of uncomfortable around really pretty people. I'm trying to get over it, because that's "shallow" too, but I'm plain-looking and it's easier for me to talk and spend time with people who aren't conventionally attractive.

Good people will attract good people, no matter what they look like. The social groups I know are my evidence of this. I personally have no time for anyone unless they're kind and also interesting. And I will even take kind over interesting. Pretty people who aren't either of these get nowhere with me. And most of my friends have the same attitude, if their social groups are anything to judge by.
