I really don't want to get into the Israel part of the secret, but yeah, it would be nice to see some more German good guys, I think.

I mean, I liked Pacific Rim, but after I read the novelization, I just was sad that movie!Gottlieb was British, whereas book!Gottlieb was German, and wouldn't that have been cool? To see a German guy helping to save the world, instead of as part of a vaguely Nazi (or outright Nazi) like organization of ~evil~?

The only other person I can think of is Doctor Erskine from the Captain America movies, but he dies so fast...

But all "good" Germans have a British accent so you know they are good. It is the one exception to the Evil British Accent rule.

Obviously.

Movie!Gottlieb is British? I always thought he was German and I didn't even read the book. Is it officially stated that he's British?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought he was German, too. I was under the impression that both the scientists were.

Honestly, I think he is? At least, when I first watched the movie, I didn't personal peg him as German (yes, his last name is based on a German mathematician, but names =/= ethnicity), because of his accent and what not, though you're right; now that I think about it, he's not actually officially stated he's British... But he's not specified as German, either.

IDK, admittedly, I am basing the accent issue compared to my grandmother's accent, maybe she had a different regional accent?

(saw the movie, never read the book)
I just assumed he was German because of the name. In American movies, characters who are from not-America always have British accents.

There is a novelization? Is it written by Alan Dean Foster?
loracarol: (What flash)

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-05-02 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the one; got it so I would have something to listen to on this one really snowy shitty day. |D

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That was just a wild guess, Alan dean Foster only writes novelizations these days. That is why there is no Spellsinger movie series. Everyone looks at the books, sees ADF's name and thinks there must already have been a movie and the reason they didn't remember it was that it flopped.
loracarol: (why hello there ^_~)

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-05-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, I didn't know that, interesting!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's not written by ADF. It's by Alex Irvine and is actually pretty good!

There's Dr. Schultz in Django Unchained.

Oh sweet, I might have to watch it now!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
His name was Hermann Gottlieb, it was pretty obvious to me he was German

I have a German name too, but I wouldn't call myself German; my grandparents were.

Hermann having a German name, but no other markers felt a little, to me, like they were making him a "safe" German, like "oh, he's German, but listen to his accent! He's not really German, because having a German good guy would be silly."
