I really don't want to get into the Israel part of the secret, but yeah, it would be nice to see some more German good guys, I think.

I mean, I liked Pacific Rim, but after I read the novelization, I just was sad that movie!Gottlieb was British, whereas book!Gottlieb was German, and wouldn't that have been cool? To see a German guy helping to save the world, instead of as part of a vaguely Nazi (or outright Nazi) like organization of ~evil~?

The only other person I can think of is Doctor Erskine from the Captain America movies, but he dies so fast...

Here is the thing, most of those games you are talking about are for an American audience so of course America is not going to be the bad guy.

So why Nazis? Well for one, no one is going to be writing articles about how this video game is stereotyping/murdering [non-white people/country]. The second thing is that Nazis are ICONIC. The swastika, the uniforms, the goose step march. They are perfect looking villains. Which is also why they are used as a inspiration for fake bad guys.

Dude, Americans are cast as the bad guys some times. Ever seen any of those American military parallel vs Native American parallel stories? It happens, and that example (mostly) happened a hell of a lot longer ago than WWII. Funny thing, but people don't usually forget genocide.

I see where you're coming from, OP. Yes, the Nazis were a devastatingly horrible part of history. Nobody (in this thread) is denying that. But a lot of other horrible things have been done, both before and since, and German people these days still seem to be unfairly stigmatized for their country's history.

And I fully support making Americans the bad guys way more often -- let's start from the fact that we're the only nation to date that's ever actually used nuclear weaponry against another country. Now we're trying to tell everyone else what to do with their nukes like we're some ultimate moral authority on it? Fucking incredible...

I get what you mean, OP. I'm not German myself, but I've seen plenty of Germans online get treated like shit over this -- usually completely non sequitur as the argument is about a video game or something, and then the other person goes "you nazi bastard". It must be tiring to constantly see your country vilified.

For what it's worth, there are some really good books/comics/movies/whatever that portray German characters during the war as actual humans.

Also, though this a bit on the silly side, perhaps you can tell yourself that it's at least partly for aesthetic reasons? I've seen plenty of video games and such where the villains' uniforms are based on the SS one -- because, and I quote, "it's the coolest looking there is".

No one mentions Israel because we are all terrified of Mossad murdering us in our sleep or abducting us and making us the next Prisoner X.

The reason no one brings up the US, UK, Australia, etc is that they are English speaking nations and are primary markets. The reason it isn't China or Russia is that China and Russia are the primary non-English language markets. Germany gets it because it isn't a primary market in either English or sub/dub print, and of course the costuming of the Third Reich and Kaiser's Era is exquisite so you are always risking a near certain academy award for costume design regardless of anything else. Plus German always sounds so aggressive, even if you are saying you like puppies and rainbows it sounds like ordering a death squad on someone.

Because it's easy to hate Nazis. Because everyone hates Nazis except Nazis. Because plenty of us grew up hearing stories from our Grandparents or Great-Grandparents about the war.

Maybe in another 50 or 70 years when everyone who remembers WWII is long gone Nazis won't be so much fun to kill.

As a Jew, I'm sorry that Germany today is still being vilified for the actions of a generation that has almost disappeared. I also respect your country's acknowledgment of wrongdoing and actual attempts to right some wrongs. It's a hell of a lot more than many guilty parties have done.

I am however terrified of the day we "move on" from WW2. Because that's when everyone forgets. And that's when it starts again. Maybe to the Jews, maybe to Muslims, maybe to Armenians or Canadians or anyone else that's easy to use as a scapegoat.

You say it's already been 70 years? To me, it hasn't even been 100 years and already there are kids in school who don't know what the Holocaust was. Europe is covered in swastika graffiti left by people who don't even realize how horrible that is. People like me are almost alone in the world because you don't bounce back from genocide. By my calculations, I should have about 1000 relatively-close blood relations in the world. I have three outside my immediate family, 2 of whom I've never met. The war is still echoing.

From a writer standpoint I sorta get the whole "ENOUGH Nazi villains" like there are a LOT of villains based on Nazi's. Unless people are planning on doing something unique with it, they should probably use some OTHER inspiration. There plenty of other baddies in this world to base villains after. But Nazis have kind of been done to death, IMO.

Hell, one of my big antagonists in my work is somewhat inspired by Fred Phelps.

This has got to be the most pathetically transparent wankbait I've ever seen in my life.

But to take you seriously for a moment (why? I don't know, I' stupid I guess), I'm sorry, but actively rounding up and murdering over SIX MILLION PEOPLE in the span of a few years is a feat that hasn't been topped. Even people who technically caused the death of more, like Stalin, didn't do it in such a direct, compressed, machinated fashion. Nothing quite like Nazi Germany has ever occurred. If you think some things in the time since then are worse than Nazi Germany, fine, go ahead and think it, and make your case for it, but your evidence of your case against the US/Israel/whatever just won't be as compelling, persuasive, damning, dramatic, explicit, or powerful as the case against Nazi Germany, and therefore you won't see as many people jumping onto your bandwagon for anything except a bit of variety.

There's also the aesthetic aspect, which when it comes to fiction, is hard to brush off.

So, here's where I get you: the Germans, in general, shouldn't get shit for what some of them did a generation ago. And in a fair world, Americans would be the bad guys more often (but we don't live in a fair world and, as someone else has already pointed out, America is generally a primary market).

But...the rest?

First, the Russians and Japanese definitely do get portrayed as villains. Second, people definitely do criticize Israel and portray it poorly. Third, the reason it's so easy and so popular to use "Nazi" as shorthand for "bad guy" is because the Nazis are a morally clean enemy. By that, I mean that there is absolutely no way to justify what they did. Why would people make a big deal out of genocide, and focus on that over other types of dickish behavior? Because it's fucking genocide. I'm sorry that your countrymen were intimately involved in it, but that doesn't actually change anything. As an American, I don't freak out on people for criticizing the US. I accept the reality that my country has done some fucked up shit.

Not touching some parts of tht secret, but I find it disheartening in movies/tv shows sometimes. It's one thing if the bad guy is German, but in 80% of the cases (yes, I made that number up from my personal impression) they also turn out to be Nazis (who also suddenly start talking in that weird cartoonish accent???).
Idk, I don't feel like I have the right to complain, cause my country did all those horrible things and it should not be forgotten by any means... but yeah. Idk really know what to say.

Does remind me of the time my best friend from school went to the US for a year and upon learning that she's German, people seriously asked her if she was a Nazi and did the "Heil" thing. :/

As people have already pointed out, Nazi Germany is a convenient target because A) it doesn't exist anymore B) it's white, therefore no accusation of racism can be said against people who demonize it and C) it's something Americans fought against, so they can pat themselves on the back and feel proud of themselves for being on the side of the good. Also, in American cinema, I've seen more depiction of Russians as the bad guys than Nazis, especially during the cold war.

But then again, EXCUSE YOU. There's a fucking HUGE difference between a systematic genocide causing, literally, millions of deaths in 6 years, and an armed conflict between two people over land, causing, at the very highest estimates, a few tens of thousands of deaths in over 60 years. And, really, the "people talk too much about the Holocaust" shit? Really?

You are conflating the idea of Nazi Germany with Germany. They are not the same thing. One is a period of time described by its war, political party, inhumanity, and death. The other is a modern country with a long history that happens to have the first one in it.

Maybe you should stop thinking of yourself as a Nazi. Just saying.
