I see where you're coming from, OP. Yes, the Nazis were a devastatingly horrible part of history. Nobody (in this thread) is denying that. But a lot of other horrible things have been done, both before and since, and German people these days still seem to be unfairly stigmatized for their country's history.

And I fully support making Americans the bad guys way more often -- let's start from the fact that we're the only nation to date that's ever actually used nuclear weaponry against another country. Now we're trying to tell everyone else what to do with their nukes like we're some ultimate moral authority on it? Fucking incredible...

This is something that I would actually like to see addressed in movies, if only to put an end to the "but, but we had to do that in order to stop the war (faster)" excuse that some people still use.

The USA's use of nuclear weaponry is actually part of the reason New Zealand and other South Pacific countries aren't allied with them any more. Testing nukes on tiny little islands is a bigger deal when you *live* next door to those tiny little islands, after all. It would be interesting to see that as a background for the bad guys.

No, it isn't. They share membership in some groups, but they themselves are not allies and haven't been for almost thirty years. There has been a thawing of relations lately and talk of trade agreements, but that's not a treaty and they are not official allies. To quote a CSIS article:

"The bilateral security relationship is now comparable to pre-1985 levels of cooperation. Speaking at the conference, former deputy assistant secretary of state Randy Schriver labeled this cooperation an alliance “in all but name.” He was the only speaker who assessed the security relationship in this way.

Other panelists noted that resuming a full alliance would not necessarily be in the interests of either the United States or New Zealand. They argued that New Zealand finds value in its independent status in its relations with China, India, and other Indo-Pacific powers." Poke around a bit. Read news articles. Although the USA seems keen to sweep that under the mat and presents them all as pals, NZ media shows a much more professional relationship that is nowhere near as buddy-buddy as the 'basically an alliance' relationship touted by the Americans.

Perhaps the most compelling evidence, for me, is that when I was *in* New Zealand, *at* the Te Papa Museum, it was explicitly stated that they were *not* allies in an exhibit. That was in 2011, and I'm sure such a monumental switch, if it had happened in the last three years, would be *somewhere* online.

Explain why NZ is run by the US's corporate interests dept, and the US copyright enforcement team? It doesn't even answer to the US government, that is too far up the chain for NZ. US Corporate lawyers order NZ police and security teams around.

New Zealand? *New Zealand* isn't allied with the US? They are part of the Five Eyes partnership (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Eyes). That is literally about as allied with the US as you can get.

In that very wiki, Five Eyes is described as a "supra-national intelligence organisation that doesn’t answer to the laws of its own countries".

Belonging to it, and continuing to do so after 20 years despite the fact that two of the countries had dissolved their formal ties and treaties, is not the same as an alliance. The same is true of them both dealing with NATO.

The fact that both countries avoid using the term 'allies' at all is a more telling fact, despite the recent thawing of relations. Even the new agreement from October of last year isn't technically a treaty. They're presented as such, just without the word, in American media, but not in NZ articles. The only time I can see anyone having used it was this case, which I have copied directly from Wikipedia.

"In July 2008, Condoleezza Rice, the United States Secretary of State, visited New Zealand, which she referred to as "a friend and an ally". Until I see proof that both agree they are allies, I am going to continue to go with what I saw with my own eyes at the Te Papa Museum: They are not allies and have not been since the fallout over nuclear vessels in New Zealand waters.

IMO America is the most terrifying country right now. Maybe it's not the evilest one, but among the evil ones, it's the one who pretends to be the goods guys fighting for peace when they are murdering and abusing not only their own citizens but other countries.

As a Canadian, I second this. It's fucking horrifying to see what Harper and his cronies are doing to this country. And with them constantly trying to kill democracy (that fucking "Fair Elections Act", ugh), there's nothing we can do about it.
