I already knew he was going to be evil because of the Frozen storybooks, buttttt it's kind of obvious. He says in his song that he wants a 'place to call his own' and looks over at her castle. Then there's the whole 'looks up at sharp crystals over queen and shoots said crystals with arrow'

"Place to call his own" doesn't necessarily mean "murder two sisters and steal their throne," though. Most characters in newer princess movies have motives other than love in the beginning. The chandelier thing is something I'm pretty sure results from fandom overanalyzation, because he then tries to save her so she can stop the weather rather than, you know, shooting her point blank when she's very clearly about to kill one of the men he brought with him.

In hindsight, yes, you can say those things are suspect, but if he hadn't turned out to be evil, no one probably would have noticed them at all. That's pretty bad foreshadowing.

He looks at her castle when he says this, and not her. The song is 'love is an open door', not 'stuff I want' Also, he could have stopped him from firing all together. He looks up and instead of take the crossbow away he aims it at the chandelier. :p
