I already knew he was going to be evil because of the Frozen storybooks, buttttt it's kind of obvious. He says in his song that he wants a 'place to call his own' and looks over at her castle. Then there's the whole 'looks up at sharp crystals over queen and shoots said crystals with arrow'

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Place to call his own" doesn't necessarily mean "murder two sisters and steal their throne," though. Most characters in newer princess movies have motives other than love in the beginning. The chandelier thing is something I'm pretty sure results from fandom overanalyzation, because he then tries to save her so she can stop the weather rather than, you know, shooting her point blank when she's very clearly about to kill one of the men he brought with him.

In hindsight, yes, you can say those things are suspect, but if he hadn't turned out to be evil, no one probably would have noticed them at all. That's pretty bad foreshadowing.

It wasn't a big surprise, no. It was, however, written clumsily enough that some of us are grumpy about it.

Also, the reason you were suspicious was because of the number of siblings he had? Where's the logic in that?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That's the reason I was first suspicious too. I think it's logical, given the setting.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but he has eight brothers ahead of him in line to the throne, so there would have been pretty much no way for him to ever take over the kingdom unless there was a freak accident or something similar. It's logical to think that he would have gotten bitter over that.

That's what I've been saying since day one. It just felt so rushed and tacked on, y'know? Like the writers got to the climax and went "Oh, shit, we really need a villain and the duke is too silly for the role."

People have been saying that this is a crazy plot twist? Where, on tumblr?

I wasn't shocked by the plot twist, just disappointed in how it played out.

IMO making him a villain was taking the easy way out, instead of having Anna deal with the possibility that she would have to let some guy down. Oh, so he's a villain who didn't love her and was really plotting against the Queen all this time? Awesome! Screw him, now she can be with her one true love Olaf!

Of course, I haven't read the book, so it could be this particular plot twist was handled a lot better there.

I agree. I don't think it was all that well hidden, to be honest. Just the fact that he was put off by her 'sandwiches' comment in the song was enough to make it obvious, let alone that he was such a follower in the whole song part. It was a very 'trying too hard' vibe, which really doesn't have any other reason to exist in an animated movie. Live action, sure, some actors just have terrible chemistry together, but not animated. That was done deliberately.

Then again, it is targeted to little kids, so I approve of that having spoiler warnings for them. I just don't think it deserves the adult surprise it's generating.

Also, isn't it twelve older brothers?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is, while it was a twist, it just wasn't a good twist. Yes, we all figured he'd turn out to be some kind of phony, or at least not Anna's true love, because of the other guy. And yes, you could assume him... having older brothers who picked on him and him wanting his own place is totally him = secretly evil (?).

But even then, it seemed random and convenient. At very least, I think there should've been more hints - not that would give it away the moment you saw them, but looking back it would be more obvious. He just wasn't a memorable villain to me, though, because it was so random and he was suck a relatively minor character. They should've stuck with Elsa becoming more of a villain, even if she were redeemed at the end, but I guess that would've seen too much like "Wicked".

I've mentioned this before, but shortly after Hans arrived on screen and before she knew anything other than Let It Go and the trailer with Sven and Olaf, my four year old turned and asked if he was the bad guy. When the twist came, the teenagers behind us were SHOCKED and the little kid was just pleased with her intuition. Every time I hear people complaining that it came out of nowhere, I wonder whether they really are dumber than a four year old.

(For the record, I suspect it might actually be genre-savviness. The four year old didn't KNOW to expect X, Y and Z from Hans as a decoy love interest, so she picked up on other things instead.)

I think the reason it was just a big twist to so many people is because they just weren't paying attention. The older brothers line was said in casual conversation, so many audience members probably just thought "Ah, just some backstory. I'll just ignore that since it's probably not important to the story." The subtle hints in the song aren't very noticeable either, since the song itself just seemed to be "awkward." His movements and actions could easily be passed off as humorous and unimportant. The genre-saavy viewers were the ones who picked up on these things, not the casual moviegoers.

When you're aware of the twist and watch the film a second time, it's very easy to pick apart all of the little hints. First-time viewers aren't aware of them, so they aren't really suspicious. The moment they do become suspicious, though, Hans' act falls apart. It's just a matter of when/if they catch on.

1) How dare you cover up his beautiful face with text.

2) TWELVE older brothers. (Three of them pretend that he was invisible. Literally. For two years.)

3) This comment is pointless. I just really love Hans okay.

Honestly, I always assume that the royal/non-endgame romantic interest in Disney movies is going to be evil or at least a jerk. I'm right most of the time.

I assumed the "twist" shock was just about Disney convention itself?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-05-03 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I was spoiled by accident ahead of time, but even looking for signs of it I didn't really see much beyond the questionable motives of all those older brothers (which - I thought there were 12, not 8?). Even looking for the signs of betrayal ahead of time it was hard to see, enough that up until the betrayal actually occurred I started to wonder if maybe I misread something and Hans didn't turn out to be the bad guy.

That said, I think the "twist" or "shock" aspect has less to do with how Hans' betrayal itself was shocking in its own right and more that it was unexpected, coming from a Disney movie. Given Disney's M.O. about things like "love at first sight" and "happily ever after" and all that, I think that the fact Disney went so radically against their own grain was what threw people off, rather than the betrayal itself.

Once it became clear that Sven was gonna be the love interest, I knew they'd have to do something with Hans that didn't make Anna look bad. If he was legitimately a good guy who gracefully acknowledged that there wasn't love between them and just...went home quietly after doing Anna a million favors like running her kingdom and saving her sister, lol, no.

Almost totally unrelated to the secret, but...

I watched Pushing Daisies for the first time a while ago and a couple episodes in, it hit me like a plank to the head that the reason why Lee Pace as Ned seemed so familiar is because he looks uncannily like this guy.

(YMMV on that. It might just be the sideburns.)

Mmmhhh maybe it was the way he did it? I mean, he pretty much was "Oh Anna, if someone out there wuved you /Z-snaps and is out" that felt pretty personal to a lot of people. Like such a stab on the back, except Anna took it pretty well.

But honestly, it was really never hinted he was evil. So that might have also had something to do with the shock.

I watched the movie already knowing he'd turn out to be the real villain, but I thought all hints of him wanting to take over were well-hidden. Even watching it last night, I still think that, even if I can now see all those details people point out as being BIG HONKING CLUES.

I merely think that for adult minds used to Disney's usual track record of holding up Love At First Sight, the BIG HONKING CLUES are not really as big as people claim they are.

And on a whole, I actually do like that he's not so obvious and doesn't have some hit-you-in-the-face evil laugh scene to clue us in. I like that for once a villain is not obvious, because Real Life does not have people being obvious about their intentions.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He showed up and I was all "oh, don't be a douche, don't be some gold-digging douche who's going to break Anna's heart" and then he progressively showed how he wasn't a douche, was a great guy, supported Anna, was helpful and loyal and I was thinking "THANK YOU, not a douche, hooray!" and then he did his heel face turn and I was rolling my eyes thinking "Shiiiiiiiit. You had to go there after all, didn't ya, Disney. Goddammit."

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people like to get caught up in the storyline at least the first time around instead of fan-analyzing every nuance to death from the start.
