The thing is, while it was a twist, it just wasn't a good twist. Yes, we all figured he'd turn out to be some kind of phony, or at least not Anna's true love, because of the other guy. And yes, you could assume him... having older brothers who picked on him and him wanting his own place is totally him = secretly evil (?).

But even then, it seemed random and convenient. At very least, I think there should've been more hints - not that would give it away the moment you saw them, but looking back it would be more obvious. He just wasn't a memorable villain to me, though, because it was so random and he was suck a relatively minor character. They should've stuck with Elsa becoming more of a villain, even if she were redeemed at the end, but I guess that would've seen too much like "Wicked".

"and him wanting his own place"

...he's royalty who's so far down the line of succession that the stupid snowman has a better shot at a crown than he does. He's not after his own apartment with a play station and a fridge full of beer.

I agree with this. I think if they had developed his character more and dropped more hints, then it would have had more of an impact and seemed less tacked-on.

Yes, well, potatoes are notoriously bad at picking up on foreshadowing.

No way. Elsa being the villain is a cliched and hackneyed trope. The woman who can't HAAAANDLE her power. The Hans twist was much better. Not that the movie was perfect, but that would've been as boring as if they'd made Kristoff's act of true love smooching be the cure.

Are you kidding? Like what happened with the love interests wasn't a cliche already? It was a sister story, it should've been about the sisters more. And Elsa's power wouldn't be about her not able to control it, but about a frightened kneejerk reaction to thinking she is a monster, self-fulfilling prophecy, etc.
