I don't think I've ever heard of someone describing Joffrey as just "a crappy guy".

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
meh, by GoT standards I'm pretty sure that's a fair assessment. there are more morally reprehensible characters than him.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
In terms of major characters he's at least in the top 10.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He would have become the worst one. He was the king, he would have done any thing he wanted to and no one could have stopped him. Look at how terrible he was already, and he had his mother, his uncle and his grandpa to stop him when he crossed the line. Imagine when he was an adult and he didn't obey them anymore.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ramsay is basically what would happen if Joffrey grew up. But since Joffrey didn't grow up, he's nowhere near as bad as Ramsay.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Y'know? I don't think so.

There are (human) characters who are, perhaps, on the same level of evil. Bolton and his son come to mind. Littlefinger is terrible and creepy and gross, but he's usually at least motivated by something other than wanting to hurt people.

But Joffery? Joffery is as bad as or worse than all of them with one additional fatal flaw:

He's stupid.

He's stupid, and his stupidity and sadistic lust completely control him. He does whatever he thinks will hurt people the most without actually thinking about how it will affect him or his position, which he believes he is magically entitled to and could never lose. It makes him so much more dangerous and stupid.

But Joffery? Joffery is as bad as or worse than all of them with one additional fatal flaw:

Spoken like someone who hasn't read the books.

Pretty sure a little brat who cut open animals is not worse than the guys who rape women to death (Gregor, Rorge, Biter), the guy who forced a 13 year old into being a prostitute and who is the reason behind everything that went wrong in GOT (Littlefinger), and the guy who captures women, sets them loose, rapes them, and then skins them alive and who also forced his 13 year old wife to get raped by his own dogs (Ramsay). Roose is believed to be even more reprehensible than even Ramsay. Joffrey is fucking small time.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. We're talking about the TV show, not the books. And based on the TV show, OP has a pretty solid interpretation here. A lot of the stuff you're talking about hasn't happened on the show.

And we all know pea-brained Joffrey wasn't just slicing up animals.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody specified we're talking about the TV show though? My reply was to an anon who said Joffrey is the most reprehensible character in GOT, which simply isn't true. The worst book!Joff did was shoot arrows at a mob of smallfolk, have Sansa beaten, and cut open a pregnant cat.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
SA

Oh, and he also killed Ned lol.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Off the top of my head, I remember that Book!Joff was fond of ordering mutilations and duels to the death as punishment when administering "justice." Also that he had the Antler Men executed by having antlers nailed into their skulls, then throwing them from the ramparts with a catapult. There's also a good chance he sexually abused his little brother.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
DA here.

There's also a good chance he sexually abused his little brother.

loooool I love how obsessed with rape the GOT fandom is. Nowhere does that "I used to go inside when Joffy..." quote imply sexual abuse, especially in the context it was given. Tommen says that after Jaime mentions how he "went inside" whenever he witnessed Aerys do terrible things and physically hurt people. For all we know, Tommen may be referring to when Joffrey gutted cats.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, still nowhere near as bad as what Ramsay, Rorge, Biter, Gregor, LF, etc. have done.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret is a picture from the tv show, and the secret is a reaction to how fandom reacted to something that happened on the tv show. And the reactions above are in relation to the tv show. Clearly, we're talking about the tv show here. It doesn't matter how clearly we've never read the books. We are clearly talking about the tv show, which is not the books.

And There's no need to get snippy over someone for not reading the books. It's not required if you want to watch the show. Some of us would rather spend our reading time on other things, and that's okay. That doesn't mean our interpretation of the show is wrong because... The books!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
We are not talking about the fucking books, so...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, I didn't realize "meh, by GoT standards I'm pretty sure that's a fair assessment. there are more morally reprehensible characters than him" was a show specific sentence.

Besides, the show is a shitty adaptation anyway.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
GOT standards

GOT

Not ASOIF

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure GoT refers to the TV series, since the book series is actually ASoIaF.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
The picture is of the show so it's safe to assume we're talking about the show.
This is one of the fandoms where book fans kind of annoy me tbh. Do you also go "but but but Silmarillion" in a secret thread about the movie Lotr/hobbit?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
No, because the lotr movies are good, whereas the GOT show is abject shit written by hacks.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
I know A LOT of LotR (book)fans who would very, very strongly disagree.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 10:42 am (UTC)(link)

Same here. GOT secret threads never disappoint me in seeing a butt hurt GOT book fan getting their panties in a twist.

Adaptions need to be viewed as separate from their source, especially in the case of GOT. Trust me, it makes for a more enjoyable experience when it comes to the adaptation.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha this. Damn the book fans here never disappoint.
