Names of genderswapped characters

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
If you read (or write) genderswap fic, what are your preferences for treatment of the character's name?

Also, can you figure out what single character has had each of these names in his genderswapped version: Vivianna, Artemis, Rose, Aemilia, Rosemary Ann, Hannah, Harry, Gemini, Analeigh, Eleora, Isabella, Rowan, Willow, Vitani, Grace, Harriet, Harmony Lily, Harri, Jenna, Jadis, Vivian, Raven Louise, Kathryn, Hanna, Victoria, Miriel(?), Aina, Cherry, Belvedere, Heather, Siobhan, Buffy, Taylor-Jade, Violet, Alexandra Alice, Ari, Evangeline, Jessica, Calypso, Hollis, Henrietta, Caesarea Lissette Kira, Skylar Lyra, Morgana, Honey, Aurora.

That isn't a list of gender-swap names for Harry Potter, is it?

Yes it is.

I haven't run into anything else with so much variety.

I don't care what it is as long as they don't take a male character's name and add an 'a'. No, Dereka for Derek is not a good name. TRY AGAIN.

If they have to feminize Derek's name, I will only except Dora, lol.

Derek to Dereka is bad, but if you lost the D and swapped the second e for an i then you'd have Erika, which is good.

The only one I've ever liked for Derek is Devon.

I'm totally cool with add-an-a as long as it results in an actual name.

In all fairness, I once met a Derica/Dereka/Dereca (i can't remember how to spell it).

I just keep the same name. If it's a gender neutral name, so much the better. If it isn't, I just figure either the parents had crappy taste, or they picked up a weird nickname.

It honestly depends on the characters/background. If they have parents/a background where giving a girl a "unisex" name makes sense, keep the name!

Can their name be a nickname for an opposite gender's name? (i.e. Harr(y/iet), Ton(y/i), etc.), keep the name the same.

When you change the name of someone so thoroughly that I can't tell who they're supposed to be anymore, that frustrates me; I want there to be some similarity between the old and new name, just so I don't get lost! (Especially when it's an "everyone is genderswapped" fic.)

Oh man, my name is in there. I rarely ever see my name. Holy shit.

Re: Names of genderswapped characters

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on the character. Generally, I like names where I can look at it and know who it's referring to. In cases where it's mentioned in canon what certain characters' names would be if they'd been assigned male/female instead of female/male or where they're named after, say, a parent and would presumably have been named after the other, I prefer those names.

Re: Names of genderswapped characters

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I'm not sure I have any preferences but I will say this randomly gave me an idea for a fic genderswapping one of my favorite characters (even though I've never finished a fanfic and I haven't even attempted writing one in a long time).

Re: Names of genderswapped characters

(Anonymous) 2014-05-02 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, the Harry Potter genderswap names. There was so much variety.

When I read it, I prefer the character to keep their name or use something similar to it. A talented author can pull off changing the names completely, but it's not my first preference.

One genderswapped Hunger Games fic I saw switched Katniss and Peeta's names, so male Katniss was Peeta and vice-versa. I don't recommend this method.

A name close to canon that isn't stupid. I can role with Harry=Harriet but I cannot handle Derek=Dereka (and yes, I know Dereka is a real name). If you want to get weirdly obsessed with it, you can always match name meanings (Derek=Derry) or match the popularity of the name around their birth year, if it's a common name (Derek being what, 26ish right now? Born in 1988, so #53 or #54 depending on the source. Corresponding girl names are either Jasmine or Anna.)

I know that this is a unpopular opinion but I generally like it when they keep the same name.

Yup. I see no reason to ever change the name in the first place. (Says the lady with a traditionally male name...)

If it's a name that's unisex or could be unisex, I'd say keep it.

If it's not unisex but there's an other-gender version or one that's very similar (Christopher to Christina or Michelle to Michael), especially if they could have the same nickname if nicknames are a thing, then go with that.

Otherwise, I try to consider what the motivations were for the original name. For instance, my go-to 63 name for Tom Riddle is Mary, because it's horribly common like Tom and she would still be named for a relative (Mary is the movie-verse name of his dad's mom which is a stretch but idc). And I'd try to have her middle name match and go with something that sounds like it could have been Marvolo's wife's name, like Morgana. It ruins the Voldemort thing unfortunately, but there's just no way lady Voldy would have still been named Tom.

Calypso? Raven Louise? Taylor-Jade? Damn.

At least Hannah and Harriet make sense.

I don't read much genderswap, but I prefer if the name matches somewhat, if only the first letter. Otherwise I can't keep track of who's who in fics with more than one swapped character.

Welll...back in the NU!Trek fandom, after the first movie came out, I got really big into genderswaped Kirk/Bones (all variations here). My favorite names were Lenora and Jane.

Never did like the male names for the genderswaped mane 6 for MLP though. they just didn't click for me, especially Rarity.

If you are going to genderswap anyone in Tolkien, you need to totally change their name.

Elven names have meaning and often that meaning would be invalidated somewhat if they were suddenly female. At the very least seriously research a proper feminine version of their name, based on what their name means.

Humans can also have gendered names. Anything ending with a -ien, -wen, -wyn ending is bound to be a woman's name. Humans tend to recycle names, including, quite frequently, Elven names from legend. Boromir is actually Boromir II, and his father is Denethor II, and grandfather was Ecthelion (the name of an Elf in Gondolin, and probably not the first Ecthelion in the Steward's line) and his father was Turgon (Gondolin's king, the one who owned Glamdring was Turgon (at least in Sindarin)).

Hobbits name girls after flowers, and in a few families (like the Tooks) after gemstones.
