Post your recommendations for June's book here. Will compile all books into a poll in a few days. Now would be the time to see us on your selection.

Also, feel free to discuss this month's book, Fingersmith at any point before the end of this month, just please, for any discussion before 31st, please mark for spoilers (Something like "spoilers for chapter 1" or whatevs.)

Read the Casual Vacancy with me! It's by J.K Rowling and there's plenty to discuss/rage/enjoy about it.
- can J.K Rowling get over her stuffy middle-classness to write authentic lower class folks?

- EXPERIENCE J.K dabbling outside of heteronormativity!

- HATE OR LOVE or hatelove the ending! The most rage-worthy deaths are yet to come!

- SORT all the characters into HP houses!

- GET TO KNOW fascinating characters like Pseudo Harry, Pseudo Venon, Pseudo Sirius, Pseudo Severus and Pseudo Lily. Except they're totally different people after all! But Pseudo Snape and Pseudo Sirius are friends! And there's also Krystal Weedon.

It's a pretty swift read, even though it's rather long.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Saenz. It's YA and an easy read but it's a beautiful story.

From Booklist:

When Aristotle and Dante meet, in the summer of 1987, they are 15-year-olds existing in “the universe between boys and men.” The two are opposites in most ways: Dante is sure of his place in the world, while Ari feels he may never know who he is or what he wants. But both are thoughtful about their feelings and interactions with others, and this title is primarily focused on the back-and-forth in their relationship over the course of a year. Family issues take center stage, as well as issues of Mexican identity, but the heart of the novel is Dante’s openness about his homosexuality and Ari’s suppression of his.

Yes! Someone here mentioned it in a book rec thread we had quite awhile ago and said it changed their life or something and not long after that I was going through a really rough period and spent most of a weekend in bed reading it. It was awesome.

Know Not Why by Hannah Johnson

It's about a 20 something guy who applies for a job at a craft store, thinking he's gonna meet girls...turns out he meets a guy instead.

It's a great coming of age/figuring out who you are story as well as a really adorable love story, pretty much all the characters are likable, and there's a lot of humor. Plus it's very fanfic-y, but in a good way. I spent a large portion of the book trying to figure out which fandom it must've been about before the author filed the serial numbers off (and I'm still not sure that didn't happen) because the dynamic between the main dudes could've fit any one of several popular slash pairings.

It's a really quick read if you want it to be (although I actually took forever to read it because I adored the characters and didn't want it to end) and anyone that's a fan of m/m stuff should totally check it out.

The Golem and the Jinni: A Novel, by Helene Wrecker

I've only read a few chapters into this, but I'm absolutely loving it. The prose is beautiful and the characters are being fleshed out in wonderful ways with their own individual histories, desires, personalities and passions - even characters you wouldn't expect to be - but non of it is expository but rich and engaging. And it's just such a different premise to use a golum and a jin as the mythical creatures and the author is doing a fabulous job of conveying how alien they are while making them relate-able and sympathetic, but also having interesting human characters alongside them.

The official summary sounds like a sort of romance novel, but the two leads seem far from meeting and are engrossed in their own trials and experiences, and seem like they will be for awhile, and I'm eagerly looking forward both to seeing what they do separately and to their inevitable meeting.

Right now I don't think I can rec this book enough, though as I said, I'm not yet half-way through it, so I can't speak for the rest of the book.

Summary:
"In The Golem and the Jinni, a chance meeting between mythical beings takes readers on a dazzling journey through cultures in turn-of-the-century New York.

Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life to by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic and dies at sea on the voyage from Poland. Chava is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York harbor in 1899.

Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire born in the ancient Syrian desert, trapped in an old copper flask, and released in New York City, though still not entirely free

Ahmad and Chava become unlikely friends and soul mates with a mystical connection. Marvelous and compulsively readable, Helene Wecker's debut novel The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of Yiddish and Middle Eastern literature, historical fiction and magical fable, into a wondrously inventive and unforgettable tale."

Whoa, that sounds really cool! I haven't seen jinni or golems used at all in literature, that's interesting.
