your point?

saying it's a social construct doesn't really give me a definition.

it's like saying dalmatians are spotted.

yeah they are, but that's not the whole picture.

Social justice has made gender different from sex, defining it as all things in society that define men/women rather than genitalia.

It's really only a useful definition when talking about transgenderism, imo, where sex and gender would not align. Which is a reasonable discussion point.

I find it obnoxious, though, when it gets into territory like "I have a vagina lol but I hate dresses so my gender is not female."

I disagree with this a little bit. It's useful for more than just talking about trans issues. There are a lot of long held expectations about what men and women should do/be like and pointing out that, for example, femininity is defined by what women do rather than the other way around, can be very important.

While I agree discussion of gender expectations are important, I don't think there's any ground gained by defining gender as "female-gendered individuals like pink and wear dresses, and male-gendered watch sports and drink beer." Like, if gender is defined by social expectations, then I personally would probably not have a female gender. Yet I am a woman, consider myself so in any definition, and would rather we stop talking about the restrictions of how gender is defined, and eliminate expectations all together. A woman who acts in a way that is stereotypically masculine is no less feminine than a woman who acts in a way that is stereotypically feminine, and so forth.

I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or not?

But that's more an issue of gender roles rather than gender itself. The problem is that a lot of people conflate the two.

er, tbh, they are very intimately related concepts.

Well... Gender and sex are different, but the problem is that social justice has taken that to a completely nonsensical place.

Originally, the idea was the gender corresponds to expected behaviors and roles. This is useful because it calls into question the idea that to be a man you must act a certain way, and that to be a woman you must act a certain way.

The social justice of the past few years, however, has lost sight of the fact that gender is about social norms. Rather than question the extant constructs, it plays into them.

Social justice actually had nothing to do with defining gender. The sex/gender dichotomy was something psychology had to define around the 1950's when people started coming to their doctors with the problem of being a "woman trapped in a man's body" (and vice versa).

"Gender" refers to a series of categories that is largely based on sex-based phenotypes. Generally speaking, you are expected to act a certain way depending on which category you fall into.

I don't know the current social justice fuckery definition, but as far as psychology goes it's generally accepted that a person's gender is the sum of the cultural expectations, biopsychosocial responses, and life experiences that shape their personal perception of whether they fall under the umbrella of male/female/other/agender/etc.

A person's sex, on the other hand is the particular biology they happen to possess.

A person can identify as any kind of gender variant they please, but in order for said person to be diagnosed with a gender-relate disorder there are other specific criteria they have to meet.
