I did actually end up feeling sorry for him the books the more we got from him from Cersei's POV. He's 13, he's clearly a sociopath, and he had an abusive father and a mother who overcompensated because of it -- and THEN he gets thrown into a position of ABSOLUTE authority. It's no wonder he went crazy.

I guess I only have sympathy for him in the books, because he's thirteen and needed mental care, whereas there are so many grown ass men doing even worse things trotting around.

Robert was abusive? He just ignored his kids, that's it. He wasn't even criminally negligent by our standards, he just didn't really show them affection or give them time.

Robert beat Joffrey in the books. Or at least once or twice (that we know of).
