When my mother tells me: "Happiness is a choice you make!"

Yes, I get that, but some days, I just don't have the energy to make that choice. Depression's a bitch like that.

I know it's dumb to be offended by it because she's only trying to help (and there is a certain truth to it, in that you can try to change your thought patterns, and I've found, at least for me, that I was the only one who could make the choice to keep living.)

My boss says that.

I always want to say "And misery is a choice you make for me!"

But I don't. I just gleefully eavesdrop for choice words while the Chinese ladies talk shit about him behind his back to his face.

If you "choose" happiness for prolonged periods of time (as opposed to being organically happy/working on your outlook/whatever), you're going to wind up in need of therapy. It's dumb advice.

Happiness is something you can achieve through improving skills like resilience, but that takes a lot of work. It's not as easy as deciding to have pudding instead of cake!
