Things you take offense to even though you know it's dumb

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there anything that you guys feel offended by even though you know you really shouldn't? For me, it's the joke comment "sleep is for the weak". I have chronic fatigue and I always bristle when people say that because I feel like it's mocking or even invalidating my constant exhaustion, even though it so much isn't, because the people who say that *gasp!* actually feel tired and need sleep too!

Share here and be thou not judged. (Not by me, anyway.)

SO MANY THINGS. I'm really easily upset sometimes. :(

One thing that's been bugging me lately is the insult "mouth breathers". I have chronic nasal problems and am often forced to breath through my mouth. I know what the term means and they're not really talking about me, but I still feel a twinge of personal insult whenever people use it.

This is actually why I try to avoid "mouth breathers". I use "neckbeards" because not shaving your neck is a choice.

Oh god, same here. I sometimes force myself to close my mouth if I'm walking in a crowded area, just because I'm afraid of looking stupid. It never lasts, though.

Me too.

I hate my allergies.

Using myopia as a metaphor for stupidity. As in, "a short-sighted plan," "myopic politics" etc. I totally GET that it makes sense as a comparison- lack of mental foresight DOES have a lot in common with not being able physically to see things that are far away. But still, as somebody with -10 vision, it bugs the FUCK out of me.

Is that taking the second definition of myopia into consideration?

Fedora jokes. MRAs didn't even ruin the fedora, people who wanted a symbol to use for marking guys as MRAs chose the fedora because they saw one or two MRAs wear one once. Now whenever I see a fedora joke I remember why I can't wear my nice hat anymore. To add extra stupidity, I'm female, so the jokes and negative fedora connotations probably don't apply to me wearing my fedora. But I still can't bring myself to.

Is it a fedora or is it a trilby?

Because what most everyone calls a fedora is actually a trilby.

one or two MRAs

uh....

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
Heck with that. Wear your fedora with pride! It is the hat of Jimmy Stewart, Carmen Sandiego, Inspector Gadget and Indiana Jones. It is a dignified and respectable hat with a long and venerable pedigree that has been co-opted by idiots who have no legitimate claim to its awesomeness. Reclaim the fedora!

(Unless of course your 'fedora' is actually a trilby, in which case, I got nothing.)

Those images that say positive things that reblogged on Tumblr. They don't know me. Also things that say fat people are beautiful too because I really fucking hate my fat and my body image is shot.

I don't dislike all the positive messages on tumblr (hey, it's a nice change from: "everyone who disagrees with my opinion even a little bit is evil")

i dislike the ones that are addressed specifically to the reader.

like telling me about my situation or telling me how i feel. they don't know shit about me, and it always comes off as patronising.

People who hear about my good grades/sports accomplishments and tell me how 'lucky' I am, or that it must be so easy.

No. It's not. I work damn hard and get to play damn little. Stop writing my accomplishments off as blind luck, damnit.

I know this is really, really stupid for me to think.

When people post how well their life is going and how they're accomplishing things, I know I should be happy for them, but instead I'm just bitter.

Anything saying that optimism is better, that you just need to look at things in a positive way, or telling me I just need to smile.

I have depression and anxiety such that its pretty much impossible for me to force myself to e happy. I don't feel anything most of the time. And I don't think feeling good when your life sucks should be a requirement. And I'm kind of a cynic and totally cool with that. Life sucks, our world is a really messed up place, and I don't think there is anything wrong with thinking that.

The term "manpain" I hate it so much. And I *get* the phenomenon it's addressing, but there's got to be a better way to address that without inadvertently (in some cases advertently) trivializing the idea that men feel grief and pain, too.

NAYRT

When my mother tells me: "Happiness is a choice you make!"

Yes, I get that, but some days, I just don't have the energy to make that choice. Depression's a bitch like that.

I know it's dumb to be offended by it because she's only trying to help (and there is a certain truth to it, in that you can try to change your thought patterns, and I've found, at least for me, that I was the only one who could make the choice to keep living.)

I've said this before, but those "inspirational" posts about "you're so beautiful and perfect and wonderful and I love you". They do absolutely nothing to make me feel better and instead just piss me off.

"A mother's love is unconditional"
"She supports you, because that's what mothers do."
"Your mom made you the person you are today. Don't forget to thank her!"
And all that other bullshit that pops up this time of year.

Actually, that last one is true. But it's a very sarcastic thanks she gets.

Now, I'm rediscovering the love of killfiles.

When people use "real" when they actually mean "biological" when talking about adopted/otherwise-doesn't-share-the-same-DNA relationships.

I was never officially adopted but raised by someone not biologically related to me and this attitude just drives me crazy.

I always get irrationally ANGRY at comma splices, misused quotation marks, and grocer's apostrophes. Even when I'm in public I'll usually mutter "Jesus Fucking Christ on a Goddamn Popsicle Stick" if I see any of those grammatical atrocities. I can't help it. I was raised by Grammar Nazis.

Derogatory comments, name-calling and jokes about people who live in house trailers. I live in one. I know it's kind of silly to take offense because (a) I know from personal experience that there are plenty of people who fit the negative stereotypes all too well and (b) I know that I am not one of those people. Still, it's annoying.

Then again, I tend not to take my own offense too seriously, so it's not like it's that big a problem.

I'm a little tired of hearing/reading curly hair described as "wild", "unruly", "crazy", etc. Or the idea that curly/big hair means you're a hippie or a "free spirit" or being intentionally nonconformist or something. As if a curly-haired person is actually just a straight-haired person who's too lazy to use a brush.

I really think that deep down, people with straight hair don't fully understand that curly/big/hard-to-manage hair grows that way. It's not an intentional hairstyle that I did on purpose. I didn't do anything to make this happen. It grows this way; it doesn't mean I'm a Manic Pixie Dreamgirl who's trying to be different, or something.

But yeah, just the trope of curly hair = eccentric, flaky, neurotic, etc.
