Why are people so eager to assume AoT takes place on planet Earth. Like why. What does that do for you.

Why is it "Earth until proven otherwise" not "nebulous Euro-fantasy world a la [shitton of manga/anime] until proven otherwise"????

Because the twist is going to be that it's earth.

Come on, the first chapter is literally titled "To you in two thousand years".

It's us, we're the titans.

How is it a twist, everyone already thinks that.

The first chapter is like 30% mindfuck, the "to you" could have been wistful or ironic. Also the semblances of many current European nations were around two thousand years ago, why mention nothing by name? Why is everything so ambiguous? Could it be Isayama is... fucking around? He's never done that before.

What the fuck does that even mean. We've gone back in time to be titans? That could be cool, but that could also be fucking stupid.

Don't the kidnappers in Mikasa's flashback refer to her and her mother as the last surviving Asians/Japanese, though?

...and having checked that episode again, the subtitles just say 'Asian'. So that doesn't totally rule out Isayama screwing around.

The one I saw said "oriental" I think. Which is even vaguer.

It's trying to communicate that Mikasa has - what WE know to be - Asian features and that the people around her do not. This is sort of a hard thing to do using only fantasy terminology. So even if it breaks immersion what else is he supposed to say to communicate this fact? The only other term I can think of is "mongoloid" and I don't know if that's even understandable (or uh, acceptable) to people.
