The first chapter is like 30% mindfuck, the "to you" could have been wistful or ironic. Also the semblances of many current European nations were around two thousand years ago, why mention nothing by name? Why is everything so ambiguous? Could it be Isayama is... fucking around? He's never done that before.
What the fuck does that even mean. We've gone back in time to be titans? That could be cool, but that could also be fucking stupid.

It's trying to communicate that Mikasa has - what WE know to be - Asian features and that the people around her do not. This is sort of a hard thing to do using only fantasy terminology. So even if it breaks immersion what else is he supposed to say to communicate this fact? The only other term I can think of is "mongoloid" and I don't know if that's even understandable (or uh, acceptable) to people.
