Ouch. Well, I wish I knew what fandom you were talking about so I could potentially commiserate or point you to gen or something.

I've been in a fandom that wasn't as big with fic-- actually, what there was was mostly gen, I think, but there were a couple of pairings that always sort of went together that I did not ship (we'll call them A/B and C/D I guess), and one rare pairing that I did, and I will never forget a fic being tagged as A/C and developing in a really compelling way, and then winding up with A/B and C/D together and A/C totally written out.

I'm not involved in that fandom much and I don't even 'ship that pairing anymore and I am still sore over that one...

Oh man, that's the worst.

Ugh me too, I've been there. It's not even so much that I shipped A/C (I just *really* disliked A/B and only occasionally enjoyed C/D). But I was at least intrigued by the possibility of A/C and that fic was a gem, decent writing and fairly logical development, I almost couldn't believe it existed because no one liked A/C in that fandom. I didn't even want them to end up together, just maybe as friends with benefits or something, but I sure as hell hated those other endgame pairings shoving themselves into my previously awesome fic.

Yes! The main pairings were kind of squicky for me, too, one of them more than the other. If it wound up being 'A/C have a 'brotherly bond' but A/B and C/D never happened, it wouldn't have been a problem, but throwing in other pairings when it was tagged for something totally different felt really... ugh.
