You're anonymous, what fandom and ship are you talking about?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP but I really don't see why that matters? It's a secret about a situation in fandom, not a particular fandom.

this is how i feel about the lost slash fandom. i mean, jack and sawyer? really? i can think of a dozen pairings more exciting than that one.

On a related note, I'm in a major Steve/Peggy spiral and spent a lot of time in their AO3 tag last week. And I swear to God, it felt like half the fic in there was actually Steve/Tony or Steve/Bucky but was tagged Steve/Peggy because of PAST Steve/Peggy.

Sigh.

That was not what I was looking for.

*empathy sigh*

To me that's a bit like listing "Hamlet/Ophelia" as a ship because one of the characters is reading Hamlet.

My biggest complaint about tagging is over-tagging, but I'd take more tags if you could specify temporal order for certain things, like pairings, deaths, or dramatic incidents. I might be happy to read a story where one of the characters underwent trauma in the past but just not want to see it play out on the page.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh. That's also true for a lot of Tony/Pepper.

I feel ya', OP. That's one of the reasons why I left both the Green Lantern and GLTAS fandoms: I was more into the secondary/minor characters, and all I could ever find was Guy/Kyle or Hal/Sinestro slash, or Razer/Aya stuff. None of which I was interested in at all. I eventually threw my hands up in the air out of frustration, and I decided to try and not let the door hit me on the way out. =T

Hopefully you'll find something in your fandom that appeals to you, OP.

Yeah, it's not fun being in a fandom where you actually don't like the big popular pairing/s. It's why I lost enthusiasm for the Shingeki no Kyojin fandom.

Ugh, that sounds terrible and I feel bad for you. My taste in pairings does often line up with the majority of fandom so I've been lucky in that aspect. Having predictable taste makes finding fic easier.

On the rare occasion where I don't ship the popular pairing: yup, it kind of sucks.

(Not shipping anything at all...have I ever done that? I feel like I could count the number of series I didn't ship anything from on one hand.)

Yep. It sucks.

Oh look at this popular thing, with many characters, and many relationships and a huge fandom. I bet there will be fic on this ship that I like... *goes to look* LOL NO. It's all X/Y. Fuuuuuu >.

I feel you OP. :( This is me and the Hornblower fandom. I wish I could say it's just the TV fandom, but that pairing is also all over book-fandom sections. Yuck.

Since you have not provided enough info, I will simply fill in my own blanks. Yeah, X-Files was a great show. I, too, got tired of the INSANE amounts of Mulder/Scully fics. Especially because I always super secretly shipped Scully/Skinner. Unf unf unf.

Ouch. Well, I wish I knew what fandom you were talking about so I could potentially commiserate or point you to gen or something.

I've been in a fandom that wasn't as big with fic-- actually, what there was was mostly gen, I think, but there were a couple of pairings that always sort of went together that I did not ship (we'll call them A/B and C/D I guess), and one rare pairing that I did, and I will never forget a fic being tagged as A/C and developing in a really compelling way, and then winding up with A/B and C/D together and A/C totally written out.

I'm not involved in that fandom much and I don't even 'ship that pairing anymore and I am still sore over that one...

Just here to say that I love the picture you used in the secret. :)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-05 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Story of my whole fandom life. I have this strange fate that I always end up liking side characters / villains / general underdogs / etc the most. Plus I love cracky and "difficult" ships. I can't name a single fandom where the most popular pairing would also be my favorite.
It certainly can be very frustrating.

Same here!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
In my case it's not an old fandom, but I've been around fandom in general for over ten years too, and it's the first time I have come across a juggernaut pairing I truly hate.

It's the first time I've ever felt that way, especially for such a popular pairing. Namely, Coulson/Hawkeye in the Avengers movie fandom. Somehow I can enjoy any other pairing in this fandom, including het which I usually don't care for (eg, Pepper Potts/Tony Stark or Black Widow/Hawkeye, FTW) and pairings I really cannot see myself (Iron Man/Captain America or Bruce Banner/Tony Stark or Tony Stark/Loki or any combination thereof - it's a toss-up whether Loki or Tony Stark is the little black dress of this fandom, it's truly hilarious!) but Coulson/Hawkeye gives me hives and I have to filter all such fics, which is really too bad because it's such a popular pairing that most stories focused on other pairings overwhelmingly feature a background or past Coulson/Clint Barton relationship. Which, ew.

I don't mean to offend Coulson/Barton fans, it's just that tastes differ... :(

(Anonymous) 2014-05-10 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I write fic for a fandom thats been around 10+ years but my longest things have been mostly Gen so I get zero love. It seems the only way to have anyone read your fics is too write X/Y pairing.
